Sports workshop for schoolchildren

Chandigarh, June 11
The summer sports workshop in roller skating, basketball and boxing being held daily at Blue Bird School, Sector 16, Panchkula, has created an environment, which augurs well for the sport in the city.

On a visit to the centre this evening, one could find nearly 100 children devoting their attention to these games.

The coaches namely A.D. Sharma for skating and Ram Chander for basketball were busy giving tips to the players. The training is being imparted both in speed and roller hockey events.

Sharma, a Haryana Sports Department coach, said due to vacations, the workshop had learners also along with trained skaters. He said after the camp they might get good stuff of budding skaters who could later join the mainstream of skaters.

Mudit Gupta, a class IV student of Shemrock School, said: “During the workshop I want to concentrate more on skating to attain more proficiency”. Similarly, Rohit Bajaj, another promising skater of Manav Mangal School, Sector 11 said: “Skating is my first love and I want to skate for India”.

Young skaters like Naurin Midha, a class IV student of Bhavan Vidyalaya, Rajan Vashisht, a class IX student of Blue Bird School, Anuradha Garga, a class X student of Bhavan Vidyalya and Geetika Anand, a class IX student of Blue Bird School, who all played for Haryana, are also attending the workshop.

Sharma said the Principal of Blue Bird School, Ms R. Bhatnagar, had opened the workshop for all children irrespective of the school they belong to. Of course the skating rink is of international standards.

Taskeen enters quarterfinals

Taskeen Bains of Chandigarh entered last eight of the under-14 and under-16 girls’ section of the AITA North Zone Ranking Tennis Tournament played at the Tennis Stadium, Sector 10, here today.

The players who have reached the quarterfinals of the under-14 girls’ section include, Anukriti Prasad, Amrita Seth, Shubhneet Sandhu, Nikunj Kamal, Monika Menon, Jilki Nelord, Taskeen Bains and Samira Sharma. In the boys ’section of the same age group, enterants were: Kuldeep Chugh, Gursher Harika, Vijayant Malik, Deepinder Singh, Kinshuk Sharma, Simerveer Singh, Ashwani Prakash,Yuki Bhambri. In under-16, entrants were: Anukriti Prasad, Neha Singh, Simmer, Taskeen, Isha Toor, Amrita Seth, Nikunj Kamal. In the boys’ section the last eight entrants were: Harneet Singh, Abhinav Grover, Sanam K Singh, Jitin Bishnoi, Prateek Tyagi, Paras Thakur and Gurdit Singh.

Cricket meet

Ropar team scored 230 runs in 48.5 overs in a quarterfinal match of the Minor District Senior Cricket Tournament against Hoshiarpur team. Ravi and Ajit Pal scored 46 and 34 runs, respectively.

CAT dismisses professor’s plea

The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has dismissed the petition moved by Dr R.M Joshi, Professor and Head of the department of Micro-biology, Medical College, Sector 32 against the Union of India through Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Union Public Service Commission through its Secretary, Mr Jagdish Chander, Reader, Department of Microbiology and four others (respondent).

The complainant, who has been working as a Professor on contract basis had moved the petition against the decision of the UPSC which declared him ineligible under essential qualifications for the post of Professor(Microbiology) in Government Medical College, Chandigarh, as advertised on October 10, 1998.

He had pleaded that the directions might be issued to the Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family and the UPSC through its Secretary, and two others to re-examine his case regarding eligibility either after confirming the genuineness of the experience certificate issued by various institutes or after giving him an opportunity of being heard to satisfy the respondents and thereafter consider his claim for appointment to the post of Professor(Microbiology) and not to declare the result till the re-examination of his eligibility.
