NDMC enter Hari Ram Cricket quarter-final New Delhi, June 10 The NDMC victory was achieved due to the fine batting of Avdhesh Srivastava (47), Saroj Rai (36) and deadly bowling by left-arm spinner Vijay Arya (3 for 23). Sonnet Club captain Devinder Sharma won the toss and elected to bat. But despite a brilliant knock of 60 by Saket Bhatia, they were bundled out for 144 in 30 overs. Sonnet struggled at 17 for 3, but Rajasthan Ranji player Saket Bhatia played a sheet anchor role, in the company of Devinder Sharma, to bail Sonnet out of a tight spot. They added 41 runs for the fourth wicket as Saket struck 60 runs off 67 balls with five fours. For NDMC, left-arm spinner Vijay Arya (3 for 23), off-spinner Ashok Lamba (2 for 21) and medium-pacer Dinesh Pawar (2 for 24) bowled tidily to put a leash on the Sonnet batsmen. In reply, NDMC raced to the winning target for the loss of five wickets in 25.4 overs. Avdhesh Srivastava and Saroj Rai added 63 runs for the fourth wicket. Avdhesh scored 47 off 41 balls with five fours while Saroj slammed 36 runs with the aid of four boundaries. Karthikeyan
races to third place at Jarama Circuit New Delhi, June 10 The 25-year-old Chennai-based Karthikeyan, driving for Tata RC Motorsports, drove bravely in the first race to finish ninth and then drew on all his skill and racecraft in the second to reach the podium, having started the race eighth on the grid. It was an excellent performance from the former Formula Nippon driver, especially after starting only eighth on the grid. It also made up for the disappointment of the first race, when he was forced to drive for most of the 18 laps without a front wing. Karthikeyan’s third place in the second leg not only proved that he can compete with some of the best drivers in the world, but also revitalise his challenge for overall series honours. In the first leg last month in Valencia,Karthikeyan finished 10th in the opening race, but was forced off in the second at the first corner, having started in P2. “This is a very good performance for me”, said Karthikeyan. “I had a good start in the second race and overtook a few people and am very pleased with how I finished”, he added. “It’s great to finish on the podium so early in the championship and I’m hoping for better results in the future”, he said. Karthikeyan said “now we need to improve the car for pace and for better qualifying times and that’s what we intend to do. The Tata RC Motorsport team have been great and everyone should share in this result”. Karthikeyan had a good start to the second race and was soon making up places over his rivals. He was helped by an excellent pitstop from his TATA RC Motorsport team on the sixth lap, which enabled him to gain more places as he went back out. He overtook another car to eventually secure third place. While Karthikeyan was flushed with his second-race performance, team manager Piers Hunnisept was also praising the Indian’s drive in the first race. Very early in that race, Karthikeyan, who had started 10th on the grid, lost a front wing but still managed to finish. “That was a very brave drive from Narain”, said Hunnisept. “He was knocked early on and didn’t have a front wing so there was no down force. Other drivers may have decided to come in and end it, but Narain kept on driving and finished the race”. Inspite of sudden weather changes before the first race, which made his team change the set-up of their Super Nissan Dallara 3.0 V6-415 hp car, Narain focused on completing the first race, ending up ninth. Both the races were won by former Formula One driver Ricarco Zonta, who has been leaving his rivals shocked as to how he is able to post far quicker lap times than anyone else. The Nissan World Series is for drivers knocking on the door of Formula One and the 20 competitors, including Britain’s rising stars Justin Wilson and
