HC quashes Bofors charge sheet New Delhi, June 10 Pronouncing the verdict in a jam-packed court room, Mr Justice R.S. Sodhi allowed the Hindujas’ petition seeking quashing of the charge sheet on the ground that the CBI had not taken the mandatory consent of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) before filing the same in the court. As a consequence of the quashing of the charge sheet, all proceedings initiated on that basis,
including its cognisance taken by the trial court, would stand quashed, Mr Justice Sodhi said. However, the judge said the bail conditions imposed by the Supreme Court on the three brothers would continue to operate. The three brothers have given a bank guarantee bond of Rs 15 crore each and are allowed to go abroad in rotation with one of them staying in India at any point of time. Meanwhile, CBI sources said though the charge sheet against the Hindujas was quashed, the one filed against Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi and the Bofors company would stand as the agency had taken CVC consent for that charge sheet. The CBI would challenge the Delhi High Court verdict in the Supreme Court, they added. However, Mr Justice Sodhi gave the CBI the liberty to file a fresh charge sheet against the Hindujas provided they fulfilled all mandatory conditions laid down by the Supreme Court in its judgement in the Vineet Narain case. The high court also pulled up the CBI and CVC for not doing their statutory duties. Mr Justice Sodhi said the CBI abdicated its duties by not seeking the mandatory consent of the CVC and latter for not going into the matter.

CPM to support Vilasrao govt Mumbai, June 10 The CPM, which has two members in the House of 288, had withdrawn support to the Congress-led government in December last citing failure to provide relief to the working class and anti-people decisions as the reasons. The party has now directed its two MLAs, Mr Ramji Varha (Jawahar) and Mr Jiva Gavit (Surgana), to vote in favour of the confidence vote, veteran Marxist leader and party’s state secretary Prabhakar Sanzgiri told a news conference here. “In this background, it would not be proper for the Left and secular parties to take any step that would result in bringing a communal regime to power in Maharashtra,” he said. However, the CPM will continue to oppose the Democratic Front government’s policies if corrective measures were not taken, he added. Earlier in the day Mr Sanzgiri met Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh at Varsha, the Chief Minister’s official residence, and discussed several issues with him. Among the issues discussed at the meeting included payment to cotton growers and condition of landless labourers in the state. He also spoke to the Peasents and Workers Party (PWP) leader, Prof N.D. Patil, another Left party that withdrew support to the government, and conveyed their decision of supporting the confidence motion on June 13. To a question, he said the party had also asked the leaders of the DF government to take corrective measures on the issues of privatisation of the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) and other such organisations or else the CPM would reconsider its decision in long term. Mr Sanzgiri said the two main reasons for withdrawing support to the Deshmukh government were its failure to provide minimum relief to large sections of the working class and the “contemptuous treatment” meted out by the Democratic Front regime to its Left constituents. The CPM was also purturbed over the Congress-NCP government compromising with “communal parties” in the recently held local bodies elections in several places in the state, including Raigad. Although the CPM has withdrawn support to the Democratic Front regime, it has declared that it will see to it that the step does not help the communal alliance in any way. Asked whether the Deshmukh government would survive the vote of confidence, Mr Sanzgiri said: “We don’t know. We have not gone to the arithmetic or the number game before taking the policy decision.” CPM leaders also alleged that Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly Narayan Rane had contacted their MLAs on telephone seeking their support which was, however, turned down. The PWP will take its final decision on supporting the government tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Mumbai High Court today dismissed petitions filed by three NCP MLAs, challenging the show cause notices issued by Maharashtra State Legislative Assembly Speaker Arun Gujarati, for withdrawing support to the government.

Another hike in petrol, diesel prices? New Delhi, June 10 “The Rs 2.50 per litre increase in petrol price and Rs 1.50 per litre hike in diesel price and the 2 per cent cut in excise duty on the two transport fuels is not sufficient to cover the cost of crude,” industry sources said. While the global crude oil price had been benchmarked at $ 24 a barrel at the time of tariff review and price increase last week, the average price of May imports is around $ 26 a barrel on CIF (cost, insurance and freight) basis. The May average price of Indian basket of crude, which comprises Oman/Dubai crude oils of sour grade and Brent of sweet grade in the ratio of 58:42, was $ 25.17 per barrel on FOB basis, sources said, adding that to this was added the insurance and freight cost. However, state-run oil refining and marketing companies, which have been given a free hand to charge import parity price and revise retail selling prices on a fortnightly basis, may not be allowed to increase petrol and diesel prices so soon. “The Petroleum Ministry has asked the oil PSUs to observe restrain for some time and not effect price changes too often. (Last week’s) price increase is yet to sink in and consumers need some more time to cope with such adjustments,” they said.

Million take dip in Ganga Hardwar, June 10 Various charitable organisations ran langar for thousands of pilgrims. Dharamshalas and hotels were teeming with the pilgrims. Hundreds had to sleep in the open on various ghats. The pilgrims had to tread a distance of over 3 km from the bus stand to reach Har-ki-Pauri and ghats. Much needed to be done as far as cleanliness on the ghats was concerned. Despite the efforts to keep beggars away, a large number of them pestered the pilgrims. Pandas had a hey day as the pilgrims make monetary and other offerings to them. Mr Suresh Kumar, who had visited Hardwar on “Budha Poornima” said the arrangements were better this time as the bus services were easily available. Occasional traffic blockades were witnessed on the bypass, leading to Har-ki-Pauri and
