Chand Khanna claim Raghubir Cricket Cup

New Delhi, June 9
Chand Khanna inflicted a five-wicket defeat on Indian Airlines to claim the 26th Lala Raghubir Singh Cup Hot Weather Cricket Tournament at the Modern School ground, Barakhamba Road, in the Capital.

Chand Khanna captain Sumit Dogra played a crackling unbeaten knock of 81 runs to lead the run charge and annex the Reebok Man of the Match Award. Chand Khanna received a cash award of Rs 50,000 while Indian Airlines got Rs 30,000.

Indian Airlines won the toss and opted to bat. Indian star Yuvraj Singh played a dashing knock of 63 off 53 balls with eight fours and two sixes. Ravneet Ricky (44), Chandan Madan (38 not out), R. R. Parida (31) and Subhash Choudhry (34) all came up with useful scores to give Indian Airlines a handsome total of 265 for 8 in 40 overs.

Chand Khanna started shakily when they lost five wickets for 188. But a sixth-wicket partnership between Sumit Dogra and Varun Kumar put Chand Khanna on the road to victory.

Captain Sumit Dogra’s quicksilver knock of 81 not out off 61 balls with six fours and four sixes was the highlight of the match. Sumit Dogra bagged both the man of the match and the man of the tournament awards. Shamsad Rizwan of Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) was adjudged the best batsman of the tournament while the best bowler award went to Raja Sharma of Chand Khanna.

Modern School chairperson Mrs Ketki Sood gave away the cup to the winners. Modern School principal and chairperson of the tournament committee Mrs Lata Vaidyanathan gave away the other prizes.

HDFC Bank beat SAIL via spin of coin

Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) and HDFC Bank played a tied match, but the spin of coin favoured the Bankmen for them to win the opening match of the 6th Lala Hari Ram Aggarwal Memorial Day-Night Cricket Carnival at the Karnail Singh Stadium in the Capital.

HDFC Bank entered the quarter-final. HDFC Bank captain Nirmal Bansal won the toss and elected to bat. They scored 180 all out in 29.3 overs mainly on the strength of the 77-run third wicket partnership between Raj Kapoor and Prashant Malviya. Raj Kapoor scored 41 with the help of three fours and one six. Gynander Pandey hit a rapid-fire 33 off just 18 balls with three fours and two sixes.

In reply, SAIL scored 180 for nine in 30 overs. Manu Kumar was their top-scorer with 39 off 34 balls. The deadly bowling of off-spinner Nischal Gaur (4 for 38) and medium-pacer Raj Kapoor (3 for 31) put shackles on the SAIL batsmen from making a smooth sail. Nischal Gaur was adjudged the man of the match. He was presented the BDM award by Mr Shyam Lal Garg. Manu Kumar got the best batsman award while Raj Kapoor was declared the best bowler.

They received Bajaj fans from Mr Ashok Aggarwal and Mr Raman Gupta respectively.

The tournament was inaugurated by former Chief Minister of Delhi Madan Lal Khurana. Others present on the occasion were Union Minister Chaman Lal Gupta, Bhola Nath Vij and Rajeev Aggarwal.

NSCC enter Super League final

National Stadium Coaching Centre (NSCC) beat Air Force on a better run rate to enter the Super League final of the Super A Division in the DDCA League at the Air Force ground.

A fine knock of 79 runs by Hanish Arora and 67 runs by Tariq-ur-Rehman helped NSCC win the match.

“Soccer Mela” from Tuesday

Nivia Football Club will take on Pachim Heroes in the opening match of the Five-a-Side Ambuja Cup Football Tournament to be organised by the Delhi Veteran Football Club as part of its “Soccer Mela” to celebrate the FIFA World Cup, being played in Asia for the first time ever.

The first match will begin at 5 pm followed by the second match between Delhi Cantt. and Golden Stars at 6 pm.

Clubs affiliated to the Delhi Soccer Association, institutional teams, sports journalists, public sector and multinational companies, corporate houses, foreign embassies, soccer veterans and school teams (under-16) are eligible to participate. Attractive prizes will be given to the winning teams.

Drive against liquor smugglers intensified

Sonepat, June 9
Officials of the Excise Department and the police have intensified the campaign against liquor smugglers operating in the district for the last few months. According to a report, Mr Taj Singh Dasgar, an Inspector in the Excise Department, accompanied by cops, conducted a surprise raid on a house of Jaivir alias Dabloo at Jagsi village, about 50 km from here, on Saturday night and recovered three boxes of country liquor and 800 pouches of IMFL (Sixer brand).

The raid followed a series of public complaints that the owner had converted his house into a godown where liquor brought from MP was being kept there illegally. The police have registered a case against the house owner on the charge of violation of the Excise Act. OC
