Rachit Kapoor shines with bat for DDCA President’s XI

New Delhi, June 6
Rachit Kapoor played a capital knock of 96, studded with eight fours off 91 balls, to guide the DDCA President’s XI to an 88 runs victory over Karma President’s XI in a limited overs match played at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground in the Capital.

Karma Social and Welfare Association is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) involved in promoting cricket and other sports among the economically and socially weaker section of society in different parts of the country by organising coaching camps, talent hunt and matches for various age groups. The Karma NGO is headed by Mrs Poonam Azad, wife of former Indian player and presently Member of Parliament, Kirti Azad.

Karma is currently holding a three-week coaching camp for 20 talented cricketers from Dharbhanga in Bihar at the Maj. Dhyanchand National Stadium in New Delhi, in association with the Sports Authority of India. Among those who watched the cricket match to encourage the players were Kirti Azad, Atul Wassan, Delhi and District Cricket Association president and Union Minister Arun Jaitley, Board of Control for Cricket in India vice-president C.K. Khanna, former Test umpire S.K.Bansal, DDCA joint-secretary Sunil Khanna and general secretary of the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Trust Vikram Kaul. Mr Jaitly presented a complete cricket kit to each member of the Karma President’s XI.

Nawab, Salim blast four-under 66

New Delhi, June 6
The duo of Mohd. Nawab and Mohd. Salim put to good use their experience with each firing in a superb four-under 66 to take joint lead after the opening round of the Rs 1.5 lakh Qutab Mini-Tour event being held at the par-70 DDA Qutab Golf Course in the Capital.

Chandigarh’s Amandeep Bhaika was tied-third with Dyal Singh, Hem Chand, Pradeep Kumar and Sanjeev Kumar at two-under 68. Amit Budwal, Brijpal Singh and Maniram Sharma were tied for the eighth position at one-under 69.

The Patna-based Nawab made a birdie-bogey start to his round and followed it up with a hat-trick of birdies on

the third, fourth and fifth. A bogey on the par-4 seventh saw him make the turn at two-under.

On his back-nine, Nawab birdied the 10th and bogeyed the 16th before finishing with a birdie-birdie flourish.

Kolkata’s Mohd. Salim began with successive birdies with a pared third hole preceding two more birdies on the fourth and fifth. The first bogey of his round on the sixth saw him finish his outward journey at three-under.

A bogey start to his back-nine set him back a bit. However, back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th helped him recover to get tied for the lead at 68.

Vikram, Ishan star for Tyagi Academy

New Delhi, June 6
Tyagi Sports Academy beat Crifit Cricket Academy by six wickets in the opening match of the S R Malhan Memorial Under-16 Cricket Tournament at the Tyagi Public School ground. Captain Vikram Anand and Ishan Singh put on 168 runs for the third wicket to star in Tyagi Sports Academy’s victory. Vikram Anand gave a fine all-round performance (84 not out and 3 for 24) while Ishan Singh cracked a spectacular 86. Vikram Anand was declared the man of the match.

Scores: Crifit Cricket Academy: 229 for 6 in 35 overs (Nakul Bajaj 74, Rajesh Akkara 65, Vidit Arora 26, Vikram Anand 3 for 24, Dinesh Rohila 2 for 39). Tyagi Sports Academy: 231 for 4 in 31 overs (Vikram Anand 84 n.o., Ishan Singh 86, Tarun Chawla 26 n.o., Devyendu Sharma 3 for 36). OSR

Inborn Club beat Madras in DDCA League

New Delhi, June 6
Fine all-round performances by Sonu Vaid (2 for 37 and 21) and Suresh Tanwar (2 for 16 and 21) helped Inborn Club beat Madras Club by 17 runs in an A-I Division Super League match of the DDCA League at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground in the Capital.

The match was reduced to 20 overs a side due to rain.

Scores: Inborn Club: 147 for 9 in 20 overs (Vishal Razdan 36, Sonu Vaid 21, Suresh Tanwar 21, Bharat Khurana 22, Kamal Chopra 2 for 15, Rodney Charles 2 for 26).

Madras Club: 130 all out in 19.2 overs (Robin Bisth 51, Rodney Charls 28, Suresh Tanwar 2 for 16, Sonu Vaid 2 for 36).

Women’s Tennis

The third leg of the ITF Women’s Circuit US $ 5000 Prize Money Tennis Tournament will be held at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association courts from June 10 to 15. The ITF Circuit will be followed by the Masters, also to be held at the DLTA courts, from June 17 to 21.The first and second legs of the ITF Circuit were held in Chandigarh and Muzaffarnagar.

Some of the prominent players participating in the Delhi leg are Sonal Phadke, Radhika Tulpule, Sheetal Gautam, Shruti Dhawan and Ankita Bhambri. The singles winner of the ITF circuit will pocket $650 while the Masters’ winner will be richer by $ 8000.

The qualifying rounds for the ITF circuit will be held on June 8 and 9. The main draw for singles will comprise of 32 players while for the doubles, the main draw will have 16 teams. For the Masters, the singles draw will have only 16 players and eight pairs for the doubles.

Mr Kishore Choudhry will be the ITF referee while Sunil Varun will be the chair umpire. Both are white badges. OSR

Gagan bowls IA into final

New Delhi, June 6
A devastating bowling performance of 5 for 15 by Gagan Deep Singh propelled Indian Airlines into final after they trounced Collage Group by 97 runs in the second semi-final of the 26th Lala Raghubir Singh Hot Weather Cricket Tournament at the Modern School ground, Barakhamba Road, in the Capital on Thursday.

After their batsmen did a fine job to give Indian Airlines a comfortable total of 243 all out in the stipulated 40 overs, bowlers Gagan Deep and Babloo Kumar turned the tide by dismissing Collage Group for a paltry 146 in 32.1 overs.

Gagan Deep was presented the Reebok man of the match award by Mr S.K.Dahiya, Department of Physics, Modern School.

Indian Airlines will take on Chand Khanna in the title clash on June 8.
