Police vacates CDPO office
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, June 6
On the directions of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, the Shimla Puri police has finally vacated the illegally occupied godown building of the Child and Development Office situated near the Gill Road canal bridge.

Employees of the Shimla Puri police station have removed all their belongings but for a wireless set and network equipment from the building. The CDPO staff have also got a portion of its boundary wall constructed again. This portion was demolished by the police to make an entrance gate.

The shifting of the police station has brought a sigh of relief for the CDPO employees, especially women, working from the ground floor of the illegally occupied building.

According to department sources, the much-needed action came when the CDPO staff contacted senior bureaucrats and ministers in the Congress Government. The CDPO staff contacted them after they failed to get any justice from the local administration. Hundreds of anganwadi workers were even lathi-charged in the Mini Secretariat premises when they were protesting against the administration’s inaction on their complaint against the illegal occupation.

The matter was brought to the notice of the Chief Minister by Ch Santokh Singh, Social Welfare Minister, under whose purview the department comes. The Chief Minister reportedly took a very serious view of the police action and ordered the district and the police administration to immediately vacate the building.

It may be mentioned here that the Shimla Puri police station’s second attempt to set up a permanent office in the building has been thwarted. While it was the role of politician which blocked its designs, a similar move four years ago was stopped by a senior police official whose wife was at that time heading the department.
