CET: good show by city students
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 5
It is great show by students of the city in yet another engineering entrance examination. Three students have made it among the top 10 in the Combined Entrance Examination (CET) conducted for the Delhi College of Engineering.

Sahil Sethi, ranked third, says, “All examinations are over and results are beginning to pour in sooner than expected. Everyday, I am hearing of a result being declared and finding my name on the select list of students, giving me immense satisfaction.’’

Adding that he came to know of his result from friends who called up in the morning, Sahil claims that a focussed effort of six hours in addition to coaching for entrance examinations is enough to see one through the examination. “I didn’t take any tuitions. Instead, coaching to prepare for the entrance was all that was needed to take the entrance,’’ he claimed.

Aneesh Garg has secured fifth rank and is followed by Jithun Nair who is placed eighth in the merit list released today. Both of them have been placed high in the merit list which was of the IIT and will join there despite their ranking in the Delhi entrance exam.

“Had we not made it to the IIT, this would have been an alternative keeping in mind our high ranks. However, for now, IIT is certainly our choice and the best choice,’’ they contend.

Placed 45th, Nagendra Singh said that he was expecting to get through this examination and others as well. “I haven’t made up my mind about joining any particular institute to further my engineering career. I will decide once all results are declared,’’ he said.

Others who have cleared the examination include Misha Pratap who is ranked 147th, Ankit Gupta who has secured 308 rank and Atul Gupta who has 1065 rank.

RPO told to issue passport to ex-MP
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 5
Just three days before the commencement of a conference by the World Sikh Organisation at Canada, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the Regional Passport Officer to issue a passport to ex-member of Parliament Atinderpal Singh, not only the keynote speaker, but also the guest of honour.

Delivering the verdict, the Bench, comprising Mr Justice J.S. Khehar and Mr Justice M.M. Kumar, further directed that the passport should be issued by 10 am tomorrow. The Bench, however, restrained the petitioner from travelling till June 7, thereby granting the respondents time for filing an appeal, if so desired by them. The Judges ruled that there was no justification in denying the clearance for the issuance of passport to the petitioner.

In their detailed order, the Judges further ruled that it was apparent from the facts that the petitioner was granted a passport earlier also and the same was not misused by him. Such vague allegations, the Judges added, could not be considered to be in fairness to a citizen of the country, leave alone an ex-MP. The Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence), the Judges further added, was asked to indicate if there was any material about any detrimental activity. The officer, however, could not point out anything from the record available, the Judges concluded.

Giving details of the proceedings, the Judges observed that from the averments it transpired that the petitioner had visited Pakistan for pro-militant activities after Operation Bluestar and was involved in a number of cases, but it was not disputed that the ex-MP was either acquitted or the cases against him were withdrawn.

In his petition against the Union of India and the Regional Passport Officer, the ex-MP had earlier claimed that the passport was not issued to him even though he had forwarded an application on July 10 last year. His counsel had added that the petitioner had been invited to attend a two-day conference being held by the World Sikh Organisation at Toronto from June 8 and as such passport for a short duration should be granted.

His counsel had further added that a diplomatic passport was granted to the petitioner in 1989. When the term expired, the petitioner applied for renewal, but the same was denied.

In a reply on the behalf of the respondents, it was, however, stated that an interim report, dated May 3, 2001, was sent by the ADGP requesting that passport facility may not be granted to the petitioner until a final report was received. The final report, they had added, had still not been received.
