Auto theft cell to be set up in city
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 30
An Auto Theft Computer Cell (ATCC) is being set up in the city by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) in collaboration with the Chandigarh police, it is learnt. The cell will be able to furnish information on all stolen vehicles from across the country and will prove beneficial to those planning to purchase second-hand vehicles.

According to sources, officials of the NCRB from New Delhi visited the city yesterday and had discussions on the issue with the officiating UT IG, Mr Ajay Kashyap.

The city is a major centre for deals in second-hand vehicles, and police sources say there have been instances in the past when buyers of second -hand cars were duped by unscrupulous elements. They were sold stolen vehicles using forged documents, specially those registered in other states.

The ATCC will receive data from a central NCRB server, which will have nationwide information pertaining to stolen vehicles posted on it. Sources say that to confirm whether a vehicle is a stolen one, the engine number and chassis number of the vehicle needs to be fed into the system and the requisite information can be obtained.

The cell is expected to be set up adjacent to the Public Window near the entrance to police headquarters in Sector 9.

Some information about stolen vehicles is already available with the Chandigarh police, but is more or less localised. A Modus Operandi Branch (MOB) in the police headquarters has been compiling information about stolen vehicles, but its work is manual and therefore time-consuming and tedious. While all information about vehicles stolen within Chandigarh is more or less available with the MOB, very little information about vehicles stolen from other parts of the country is received by it.
