A state-of-the-art paediatric centre

Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMCH) in association with ORBIS International has recently started a state-of-the-art ophthalmologic and paediatric wing at Dr Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital (SCEH) at Daryanganj. The wing has been set up under the Hand-in-Hand Saving Sight Programme.

Under the same programme, McDonald’s is also supporting an outreach programme in partnership with ORBIS AND SCEH. Ronald McDonald House Charities named after Ronald McDonald, the McDonald’s brand ambassador, is involved in various philanthropic activities for the uplift of underprivileged children. ORBIS is a non-profit global development organisation whose mission is to preserve and restore sight by strengthening the capacity of local partners in their efforts to treat and prevent blindness.

McDonald’s and ORBIS have selected the 75 year-old eye hospital as a vehicle through which they can eradicate the menace of blindness.

Vandana Luthra Curls and Curves (VLCC) have announced the launch of three chapters in fitness and rejuvenation. The three unique grooming, de-stressing and fitness spots - ‘Just for Men’, ‘Aroma Studio’ and ‘The Workout Factory’ were inaugurated by VLCC President, Vandana Luthra and cine-stars Raveena Tandon, Pooja Batra and Dino Morrea at Green Park Extension. ‘Just for Men’ is an exclusive salon for men which has a Spa zone besides a skin and hair care section. `The Workout Factory’ for men and women is a fitness centre, which provides facilities like steam, sauna, jacuzzi, chill shower and a salad bar.

The workout factory has a gym, which is manned by trained personnel who work out an individual’s exercise regime. The Aroma Studio is an endeavour to revive the tradition of aromatherapy.

Funds for TB control

The Canadian International Development Agency has provided additional funding of C$5.2 million to the World Health Organisation for two years to support the Indian government’s Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP).

This is in addition to a previous grant of C$ three million to WHO for TB control programmes.

The grant is being used to enhance supervision at the central level, expedite distribution and drugs and improve programme
reporting incluiding electronic transmission of data and support activities of consultants under RNTCP.

Tuberculosis is a serious public health problem in India. The country accounts for nearly one-third of the global TB burden. It is estimated that over 40 per cent of the country’s population is infected with the TB bacillus.

To control TB, the Indian government is implementing the DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment Short-course) strategy through the RNTCP.

AHA certification

American Heart Association (AHA), an internationally acclaimed organisation dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke, has appointed Apollo Group of Hospitals as an international training organisation to provide emergencycardio-vascular care for individuals and medical practitioners in Delhi. Apollo group of hospitals is the first organisation in India to get this recognition.

The certification authorises Apollo Hospitals to use AHA guidelines and protocol to provide emergency care and impart training in basic life support, advanced cardiac life support and paediatric advanced life support.

The basic life support programme will provide individuals training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CSR), rescue breathing and first aid. The advanced cardiac life support programme is for trained medical practitioners, para-medics and pre-clinical staff.

Those who complete the programme will get an Advanced Life Support Health Provider Card (ALSHPC) which will be valid for three years. The group proposes to impart training from its centres in Delhi, Hyderabad and Chennai initially and gradually spread the network to cover the entire country.

Siddha Vaidyashala

Dr A.K. Walia, Health Minister of Delhi inaugurated Santhagiri Ashram’s new Ayurveda and Siddha Vaidyashala at Saket recently. Specialists in ‘Panchakarma’ and other traditional forms of Ayurvedic treatment and Siddha cures have been specially sent by the Pothencode based ashram near Trivandrum to serve at the ashram. The Saket Vaidyashala is the third centre, which has been set by the ashram in the Capital.

The Health Minister said that the Delhi government would seek the help of private establishments as the Santhagiri Ashram in running an Ayurvedic college. Construction of the college at Kheda Dhaba in Outer Delhi is yet to begin.

Palliative care

Herbicure Private Limited, a bio-herbal company recently announced the launch of PANEKURE for arthritis and joint pains. A strip of ten capsules costs Rs 35.

PANEKURE, a 100 per cent Ayurvedic formulation, has been invented by a team of scientists of Jadavpur University. Mr S.R. Dasgupta, MD and CEO of Herbicure Private Limited claims that a dose of two capsules everyday can scale down the severity of the disease.

Lal Bahadur Shastri move up in Raghubir cricket

New Delhi, May 25
Dilip TT put up a fine all-round show as he took two wickets and scored 51 runs to play a leading role in Lal Bahadur Shastri Club’s six-wicket victory over Sonnet Club in the 26th Lala Raghubir Singh Hot Weather Cricket Tournament at the Modern School ground, Barakhamba Road.

Tarun Gupta, who hit a strokeful 65 for Shastri Club, was named the Reebok man of the match.

Subhania won the toss and opted to bat. But the searing bowling by Deepak Sain, Sandeep and Dilip prevented Subhania from hoisting a big total. Mahesh Rawat and Praveen Thaper batted with moderate resistance to give a semblance of respectability to the Subhania score as they made 193 all out off 39.4 overs.

Lal Bahadur Shastri Club did not have to make much of an effort to reach the winning target. Fine batting by Tarun Gupta, Dilip and Sandip Yadav ensured that Lal Bahadur Shastri made 197 for four wickets in 38.5 overs.

The tournament was inaugurated by former Test player and senior vice-president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association Chetan Chauhan. Maj. General Virender Singh (retd), president of Board of Trustees, Modern School, was the guest of honour. President of the tournament committee S P Bansal and organising committee secretary J P Sharma welcomed the guests.

Suresh Kohli bowls DDA to huge victory

A devastating 5 for 31 spell off eight overs by right-arm medium pacer Suresh Kohli enabled Delhi Development Authority (DDA) beat Delhi Telecom by 144 runs in a B Division Super League match of the DDCA League at the Kotla No 2 ground.

Scores: DDA: 242 all out in 37.5 overs (Suresh Kohli 60, Narender Kumar 48, Maharaj Kishan 41 n o, Yashpal Saini 3 for 46). Delhi Telecom: 98 all out in 21.2 overs (Vinay Mishra 18, Suresh Kohli 5 for 31, Sandeep Kumar 3 for 16).

Bright Club beat South Delhi by five wickets in a Super A Division match at the Kalindi College ground. Salwan Boys enter Ravindra Cricket final

Salwan Boys School, Rajendra Nagar, beat DLDAV School, Shalimar Bagh by five wickets and entered the final of the first Ravindra Malhotra Memorial Under-15 Inter-School Cricket Tournament at the Bharat Nagar ground.

DLDAV, electing to bat first, made a slow crawl as they could score only 106 for 6 in 30 overs despite a rapidfire 50 by Love Sehrawat. But Sehrawat earned the man of the match award, as a minor consolation.

Salwan Boys raced to the victory target for the loss of five wickets off 25.5 overs.

Scores: DLDAV: 106 for 6 in 30 overs (Love Sehrawat 50, Nitin Kumar 2 for 21).

Sahib to lead Haryana

300-bigha encroached land freed

Ghaziabad, May 25
The Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam has got freed 300 bighas of village from the illegal occupation of some influential persons in Kela village under Khasra No.315. The land is worth Rs 25 crore, the officials said.

After freeing the land, the authorities have dug up trenches around the piece which is adjacent to the Pratap Vihar Colony of G.D.A. The encroachers had been cultivating the land and pocketing the income from the sale of crops for years. However, they sold off the crops immediately on getting the wind of the Nagar Nigam’s campaign. The remaining crop was disposed of by the Nagar Nigam for Rs 2.5 lakh.

According to the Chief Nagar Nigam Adhikari, Ram Bodh Maurya, the Nigam has already got sanctioned a proposal to build residential accommodation on this land for the councillors and the Nigam staff which will yield an income of Rs 25 crore to the Nigam. Mr Maurya said that Nagar Nigam’s land was under illegal occupation in a number of other villages also which would also be cleared off the encroachers. The Nigam proposes to build residential and commercial buildings there also. The campaign for this eviction was carried out under the Addl Nagar Nigam Officer, Mr A C Sinha, and the Dy N N Officer.
