ISI using British soil: police

Srinagar, May 25
The Jammu and Kashmir police today claimed to have achieved a breakthrough by snapping a major channel being used by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for financing terrorism in the state.

The police has so far seized Rs 3 crore during the past six months, a police spokesman said, adding that the militants had been facing a severe resource crunch and were demoralised.

In this context, the reliable inputs indicated that the ISI was using Kashmiri expatriates and was sending money through business accounts of Kashmiris in Delhi.

The ISI was using British soil and also UK-based Kashmiri expatriates for financing terrorism here, he alleged.

Following intelligence inputs, an important financial channel came to light wherein the ISI was sending money to UK-based Dr Ayub Thakur, president, World Kashmir Freedom Movement, and who in turn was sending money to Kashmiris in Delhi.

He said one such Kashmiri was Imtiaz Bazaz, a valley-based insurance claim investigator having bank accounts in Standard Chartered Grindlays Bank (SCGB) at Connaught Place in New Delhi.

Bazaz had another account in the name of his organisation Val Media Productions in the Development Credit Bank Limited (DCBL), New Delhi.

He said it was only after the state police approached the Reserve Bank of India to inquire into Bazaz’s accounts and financial transactions.

His involvement was established in receiving money from the ISI and later funding militancy here.

The spokesman said on April 22, Bazaz had received remittance of $ 9966.61 (Rs 4,84,875) from London’s Mercy Universal in his account in SCGB, New Delhi.

The old Srinagar city and Zabmagam in north Kashmir today witnessed demonstrations against the killing of a schoolboy allegedly by security forces and the arrest of five persons, including a woman.

People at Zabmagam in north Kashmir district of Kupwara took to the streets today to protest against the killing of an 11th class student Mohammad Maqbool, who they alleged was shot dead by security forces this morning without provocation.

Shops and business establishments in the area and adjoining villages remained closed as a mark of protest.

The old city also simmered with massive demonstrations against the arrest of five persons by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir police late last night.

The demonstrators raised anti-SOG and anti-government slogans and demanded the immediate release of those arrested.

They alleged that SOG personnel arrested one Mohammad Ashraf Wani, his son Adil Ashraf, a ninth standard student, his wife and two others during a night-long raid at Habba-Kadal.

The demonstrators also blocked traffic in the old city while shops and business establishments in the area remained closed to protest against the arrests.

Security forces allegedly forced the closure of shops and business establishments at Pattan Main Bazar today by firing several shots in the air.
