Police
officers’ shifting decried Mandi, May 18 Describing
the action as “immature and taken in panic”, the former Speaker
said the hasty action presumably held the transferred officials guilty
without waiting for the result of the inquiry. It had demoralised
them. He said stern action was warranted against the guilty persons
after the inquiry. “Transfer is no punishment. It merely amounted to
admission by the government that its officials are guilty and the
unwise action can prejudice the inquiry itself,” he remarked. Earlier addressing a rally at Aut, Thakur Kaul Singh demanded that the Modi government in Gujarat should be dismissed as it had failed to stop killings of innocent people there and killings there by organised gangs had tarnished the secular image of the country. He
also criticised the Dhumal government’s dismal failure on all
fronts. He alleged discrimination in the matters of development with
Mandi district. The Mandi town was reeling under acute drinking water
shortage. Work on the Regional Hospital building had also been held up
for want of money. The funds were being provided to the constituencies
of VIPs, including the Chief Minister. He said lasting solution to the drinking water problem of Mandi town was to draw water of Uhl river by a gravity mainline. He also criticised HVC leader, Sukh Ram, for not raising voice against injustice being meted out to mandi district. The
Congress leader said the people had been disillusioned with the
BJP-HVC government’s anti-people policies. |
Exercise restraint,
CM tells scribes Shimla, May 18 Mr Dhumal said journalists should exercise restraint while reporting about sensitive issues. He said there was need to protect interests of the journalists so that they could perform their duties effectively. Thanking the mediapersons for helping the government in propagating its policies and programmes he said the government shared cordial relations with the Press which assisted in formulating schemes for the welfare of the downtrodden. Mr Dhumal said the state government had provided scholarships to meritorious plus one and two students from different sections of society, which had benefited 2.88 lakh students during past four years. He said a letter had been sent to all schools to know their views on the schemes so that modifications, if any, could be made to benefit more people. Stressing upon the need to conduct periodic reorientation programmes to update the functioning of the working journalists he said this would enable them to cope up with latest advancements in the profession. He assured them all possible assistance from the government side in this connection. Mr Shyam Khosla, president of the National Union of Journalists, underlined the need for setting up of a tripartite committee for implementation of the wage board report. He said the journalists should inculcate ethical values in their professional duties, reflect the aspirations of the masses in respectable manner and stay away from political affiliations. The NUJ had taken up the case for amending the Working Journalists Act so that the part-time reporters could be covered under the definition of working journalists and benefit from the recommendations of the wage board, he said. The new office bearers of the HUJ elected today are: president — Mr R
Randev; general secretary — Mr R.L. Bali; secretary — Mr Dhananjay Sharma; and vice-president — Mr Rakesh Lohumi, Mr Shashi Kant and Mr Birbal Sharma. |
Parishad not to collect bills’ arrears Kumarhatti, May 18 It was ridiculous that panchayats were asked to collect pending water bills record of which was not made available to them, he asserted. He also criticised government move on micro planning under which certain backward areas would get priority in development. The microplanning was of no use as all developments had been done on political considerations, he alleged. He expressed dismay over inordinate delay in the sanction of revised IRDP lists. Power to sanction the lists should be transferred to respective block development officers, he demanded. He also demanded the filling of vacant posts of panchayat secretaries in Solan block where eight panchayats secretaries were looking after work of 32 panchayats . |

Stop exhibition-cum-sales, say traders Shimla, May 18 Mr Ramesh Chaujjar, general secretary of the mandal, said that in stalls items other than handicrafts and handloom were being sold and it was agreed that such stalls would close by May 15. However, no action had been taken in the matter. Deputy Commissioner had written to the Managers of the premises where exhibitions were on. While traders and manufacturers from outside the state are making a beeline to the busy tourist resort to sell products, the mandal termed it as a illegal and unauthorised commercial activity causing loss to the state exchequer. Exhibition-cum-sales have in recent years become regular feature in summer when tourists from plains throng the hill station. Some private businessmen have become experts in organising such sales. They hire suitable premises and then rent out stalls to traders who bring all sorts of products ranging from books an Ayurvedic drugs to readymade garments and handicrafts for sale. The local shopkeepers feel the pinch as the traders and manufacturers sell various items at much cheaper rates. The mandal has been up in arms against such exhibitions being organised in the name of promoting handicrafts and handloom. In fact, all sort of items, including grocery and general merchandise were sold at these exhibitions. At present such sales are running at the Gaiety Theatre, Indira Gandhi Sports Complex and Solitaire restaurant. Similar items are being sold at all exhibition-cum-sales. Dr Ashok Khanna, President of the local mandal, expressed surprise how the buildings not even completed, could be allowed to be used for commercial activity. Under fire safety norms there should be at least two exists in the hall, non-existenct in most cases. Further, no Sales Tax was being paid and even the Labour Laws and various other laws like the Shops and Commercial Establishment Act were also being violated. He alleged that such exhibitions were being used by traders to dispose of substandard goods, which did not carry any guarantee of after sales service. |
