A glimmer of hope for the mentally ill
Our Correspondent

New Delhi, May 14
Caring Foundation, an NGO based in Defence Enclave, Vikas Marg, working in the field of mental health, drug prevention and community empowerment, for the last six years, has set up a community-based half way home-cum-rehabilitation centre, ‘Sahil’ on its premises for those suffering from severe mental disorders.

It was inaugurated today by the Health Minister, Delhi, Dr A K Walia. This community-based half way home is the first of its kind in Delhi and fulfilled the long-felt need of the patients and their families.

The Caring Foundation managing director, Dr Sunil Mittal, says that Sahil (Support, Advocacy and help for Independent Living Home) will eventually provide a residential rehabilitation programme for up to 20 recovering patients on the path of reintegration into family, social and occupational ministry.

Right now, five beds have been put up and by the end of the year, additional 45 beds will be inducted. Dr Mittal says on an average, Rs 7,000 will be spent on one patient which a middle class family will not be able to afford. Keeping this in view, we are trying to invite sponsorship for them.

Even in the 21st century, after 100 years when the term, ‘schizophrenia’ was coined by Blulet, schizophrenics are getting the same inhuman treatment from society.

Two-thirds of the treated patients of schizophrenia require hospitalisation. The probability of readmission within 2 years after discharge from the first hospitalisation is about 40 to 60 per cent. In families with a high level of expressed emotions in form of criticism and hostility, the chances of relapse is quite high. Treatment of schizophrenia is divided in 3 phases i.e. acute phase, stabilisation phase and stable phase. During the stable phase, patients become relatively asymptotic and more motivated.

During this phase, patient requires specific psychosocial treatment in the form of re-education in basic living sills, social skill training, cognitive rehabilitation and vocational rehabilitation.

Dr Mittal says that the most common type of residential facility used worldwide is transitional half way home. This facility promotes socialisation. It is used as a transitional facility between the hospital and the community.

Sahil is a unique NGO - private sector partnership in providing mental health services. The technical input is being provided by the Delhi Psychiatry Centre and the material inputs are being donated by Huntman International (India) Pvt Ltd.

Poor response to plots for dairies
Vipin Sharma

Rohtak, May 14
The district administration’s attempts to shift the dairies out of the town have received a jolt as only nine applications have been received till the stipulated period against the 270 plots acquired on the outskirts of the town for setting up dairies.

There are nearly 550 dairies in the town, which are to be shifted out of the municipal limits. The Nagar Parishad has purchased 270 plots, covering an area of 37 acres on the Kanheli road for relocating the dairies. It is planning to buy another 37 acres for the purpose and Sunarian road.

The Nagar Parishad had recently spent Rs 76 lakh for acquiring 37 acre on the Kanheli road here for the purpose. The applications were invited from the dairy owners for a total of 270 plots till May 7.

However, to its dismay, the Nagar Parishad received only nine applications till the stipulated date. These applicants have also deposited a sum of Rs 3.86 lakh for the plots ranging from 250 to 1,000 square yards.

In view of the poor response from the dairy owners, the Nagar Parishad has extended the last date for submission of the application forms in this regard till May 28. Strangely, the Nagar Parishad is contemplating to purchase 37 acres on the Sunarian road here for the same purpose, despite the poor response from the dairy owners for the plots located on Kanheli road.

According to the information, the Nagar Parishad authorities failed to receive a satisfactory response for the land situated on the Kanheli road as it was a low-lying area, which often gets inundated even when there is only a light shower of rain. It is also learnt that very few people applied for these plots, as they preferred to operate in the town.
