Radhey Shyam helps Gymkhna Club enter semis
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, May 13
Delhi Ranji Trophy player Radhey Shyam blasted a brilliant 55 off as many balls with seven boundaries to help Gymkhana Cricket Club beat B M XI by 11 runs and enter the semi-final of the fourth Ramesh Chand Kagra Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Bharat Nagar School ground in the Capital.

B M XI won the toss and made the mistake of putting Gymkhana Club into bat. On a hot and humid day, the Gymkhana batsmen utilised the relatively tolerable weather in the morning to compile some quick runs with Radhey Shyam showing the way. His rapidfire knock of 55 was the cornerstone of Gymkhana Club’s innings.

Though B M Kapoor and Kamal bowled well to get some cheap wickets, the BM XI team could not cash in on the bowlers’ efforts, as their batsmen were bothered by the bowling of Surinder, Amit Sharma and Vishal Sharma of Gymkhana Club.

Radheshyam played the anchor role in Gymkhana’s win, as his quickfire shots lauded by the crowds.

Prabhjeet made a brave effort to stay put in the unbearable heat to make a valuable 63 runs, but his knock was not sufficient for BM XI to overtake Gymkhana’s total.

Scores: Gymkhana Club: 161 for 9 in 30 overs (Rahey Shyam 55, Hemant Dogra 28, Mridul Gupta 24, B M Kapoor 4 for 24, Kamal 2 for 21).

BM XI: 150 for 9 in 30 overs (Prabhjeet 63, Manas Malhotra 28, Surinder 2 or 19, Amit Sharma 2 for 23, Vishal Sharma 2 for 25).

Karun Chandhok races to third position
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, May 13
Reigning Asian Formula 2000 champion Karun Chandhok of JK Tyre finished third at the eighth race of the British Formula-3 Scholarship Class Championship, held at Knockhill track, Scotland, according to information available in the Capital. This fine showing follows hot on the heels of Karun’s second place finish at the previous round in Silverstone a week ago.

It was an unexpected happening for Karun as he had just two hours of practice on Friday to learn the highly demanding circuit. He was a surprising fifth at the end of the day but slipped back to the seventh spot during the crucial qualifying sessions held on Saturday.

After qualifying, Karun said, “Almost all the other guys in front of me have been here before and circuit knowledge is very important at this track. The undulations and the various lines that have to be used across the kerbstones make it very hard for a first-timer to be quick straight away”.

Five cars from third down to seventh were covered by just two tenths of a second.

The 18-year-old Karun made a fantastic start to the first race and jumped upto the fourth position by the end of lap five, but then made a mistake at ‘Clark corner’ and spun, dropping down to 11th position. He made up one place, but then collided with Diego Romanini while trying to pass him.

A disappointed Karun later said, “I am really annoyed with myself for spinning. I just hit the inside kerb a little too hard at ‘Clark’ and before I knew it, I was facing the wrong direction. There was a chance for some solid points in this race and I must apologise to the whole team for that”.

The second race, however, was a different story. While the attrition rate was high and other drivers crashed and collided with each other, Karun kept his nose clean and drove a solid race to finish a good third, making up for some of the disappointment of the previous race.

After winning the race, Karun said, “I am really excited with this result, especially after the first race.

The car was very good and my thanks to the whole team as T- Sport have done a superb job as well as all my sponsors for their continued support. This weekend has moved us into the fourth place in the championship, so I’m rally looking forward to the rest of the season. There’s so much I’m learning every time I get into the car, and I’m still looking more towards the second half of the season to push ahead further”.

The next round of the championship will be held at Yorkshire on May 26.
