Teachers told to shun tuitions
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 9
It is a fad that's catching on fast and the latest to jump on to the anti-tuition bandwagon is the UT Education Department. Having started special classes for students seeking admission to Class XI to keep teachers busy, it is also contemplating asking teaching staff to submit affidavits that they are not taking tuitions and even denying long leaves to any "suspects'' in the case.

This being the most lucrative time to run tuitions since Class X students are awaiting their results and teachers have a lot of free time on their hands, the list of teachers wanting to proceed on leave is endless. However, these are being denied unless the cause seems ``very legitimate''.

Such demands have been regularly pouring in at the office of the DPI (S), Mr D.S. Mangat, and continue round the year barring a few lean months, hampering classwork and affecting students' performance in government schools.

Also, as a check on its teachers as well as students, the Education Department has started special classes in science and commerce in all its model schools. These classes are being run for Class X students who are interested in taking up these streams in Class XI after the CBSE results are declared and keep them away from tapping tutors to finish their courses.

While students of the school running these free classes are being given priority in their respective institutions, the second preference is being given to students of nearby high schools of the area while the remaining seats, if any, have been left open to the outside students.

Running these free classes is serving the dual purpose of keeping the teaching staff suitably employed during free time as well as keeping the students off the tuition addiction.

While these classes began recently, the services of the teaching faculty will be put to use till the summer vacation in schools begin and then continue again till the admission process is complete. During this time, the teachers have been asked to complete as much as they possibly can so that when school actually begins, it is more of a kind of revision for them.

DISTRICT COURTS
Hearing in murder case on May 18
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, May 9
A local court today adjourned a 16-year-old murder case famously known as “Allaha Singh case” till May 18. It was alleged that Allaha Singh’s son, Inderjit Singh, had been murdered allegedly by his landlord, Hardev Singh, and his son on July 7, 1985, in Sector 34-D.

The counsel for the accused had filed a criminal revision petition against the order passed by the UT Chief Judicial Magistrate on February 26, 2000. The revision petition will also come for hearing on May 18. Earlier, the CBI, in its report, had recommended quashing of the FIR registered against the accused, Hardev Singh and others. In 1995, the court had directed the CBI to get fresh investigation done by a comparatively senior officer.

The case was handed over to the SP, CBI, Mr Kirti Chandra Kanungo, now DIG, CBI (North-East Region Guwahati). During investigation, he examined more than 100 witnesses who had been examined by the previous investigating officers. He concluded that death of Inderjit Singh was homicide and not a case of suicide.

Case adjourned

The complainant, Ms Gurmeet Kaur, Director of the Square Marketing Private Limited, had filed a complaint against Jasjit Singh Dhaliwal, Managing Director of the firm under Sections 138, 141 and 142 of the Negotiable Instrument Act, on June 9, 2000.

The complainant alleged that she had been appointed as consignee agent for the territory of Chandigarh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pardesh and Haryana by the firm under duly executive agreement on August 1,1995. The pharmaceutical company had demanded the deposition of Rs 12 lakh, at an interest rate of 18 per cent per annum payable quarterly to the complainant.

The complainant alleged that the accused had issued two cheques worth Rs 23,05,500 and Rs 21,54,000 payable at Punjab and Sind Bank, Sector 17, on February 2, 2000, but the cheque were dishonoured by the bank on February 12 with the remark “Funds Insufficient”.

Pankaj lifts audience to heights
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 9
Those who attended the Pankaj Udhas live concert at Shantikunj this evening would know one thing for sure — that the tinkle in his voice will never allow the cycle of melody to break. And no matter how far away from fame this unassuming ghazal singer might have been in the past, he is actually only as distanced from popularity as he chooses to be.

Had this not been the case, the singer would not have had his critics rave about his perfect presentations from time to time. Today was just another day which saw Pankaj Udhas in complete harmony with his soul. He commanded the crowd all through the evening drenched in rhythm.

And fitting the sequence of music were his lyrical offerings in the shape of Zafar Gorakhpuri’s ‘Aye gam-e-zindagi kuchh to de mashwara, main kahaan jaon hota nahi faisla....ik taraf uska ghar ik taraf maikda’; Janab Kaisal-ul-Zafri’s ‘Deewaron se milkar rona achha lagta hai’...and many more.

Right from the beginning, the musical concert was more about a literal conversation between the singer and his audience. The choice of ghazals and songs was such as that suited the mood of the evening well. Qawil Ajgari’s ghazal was chosen as the initiating ghazal of the show. ‘Tum na mano magar haqiqat hai, ishq insaan ki zaroorat hai...’ Pankaj Udhas’s famous nazm from his last album Stolen Moments stole audience’s heart. ‘Aur aahista kijiya baatein dhadkanein koi sun raha hoga...’was the next in line.

After a beautiful nazm which narrated the tale of lost values and morale, Pankaj lifted the mood of the evening with his full-of-life songs — ‘Chandi jaisa rang hai tera sone jaise baal; ‘Na kajre ki dhaar na motiyon ke haar; and finally the hit ghazal ‘Hui mehngi bahut hi sharaab ki thodi thodi piya karo’. Written by Chandigarh-based S. Rakesh, the ghazal was as popular in today’s time as it was many years ago.

As the final offering, Pankaj presented his hit song, which featured in ‘Naam’, a film that traced the travails of non-resident Indians. The final song was ‘Mai roya pardes mein bheega maa ka pyaar, dukh ne dukh se baat ki bin chithi bin taar, chithi aaye hai watan se chithi aaye hai; bade dino ke baad hum bewatnon ko yaad watan ki mitti aaye hai...’

In today’s concert Pankaj was supported on the flute by Rakesh Chaurasia, a nephew of Pt Hari Prasad Chaurasia; on the mandolin by Naseer Sajad Hussain; on the harmonium by Janab S.D. Sagar of the Kirana gharana; on the keyboard by Anupam Chatterjee; and on the tabla by Rashid Mustafa.

The concert was organised by UT Administration with the support of CITCO.
