Fired employees of GMCH continue stir

Chandigarh, April 24
The contractual employees of the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, who were relieved of their services continued their stir on the fourth day today. Members of the Safai Karamchari Union joined the fast threatened by these employees causing inconvenience to patients.

The representatives of the employees met the GMCH Director-Principal Dr S.B.S. Mann, in the evening to discuss the matter. According to the workers, Dr Mann has decided to form a committee to look into the matter, a meeting of which would be held on April 26, 2002.

The employees, however, stated that the Dr Mann had told them that those employees who were defaulters would not be taken back in the service.

Squash tournament on May 4,5

Chandigarh, April 24
The newly-revived Chandigarh Squash Rackets Association will hold a squash tournament for outstation junior players and local senior players on May 4 and 5. The two-day meet will be sponsored by the Mohali Club. The association, which was revived last evening, is composed mainly of squash players, now holding prominent positions. According to Mr Amitoj Inder Singh, an Asian Squash Federation level 2 coach, who was given the key post of honorary secretary, said though the CSRA was formed in the year 1983, but it remained dormant all these years. He said all office-bearers and the rest of the team aimed to make the sport popular in the city and its satellite areas.

Another important decision taken was to initiate a programme called ‘fitness through squash’ in June. It also aims to break the myths surrounding the effort and result attained in activities like weight training and weight reduction through commercialised establishments. It was observed that Chandigarh was a hometown of several international squash players like Arjan Singh, Major Rajdeep Brar, recently, the city junior players were also bringing glory at national and international level.

The following is the composition of the executive committee of the CRSA: president-Kulbir Singh; vice-president-Aseem Verma; hony secretary-Amitoj Inder Singh; joint secretary- Anurag Verma; treasurer-Ranjit Kohli;PRO-Saurabh Nayar; members-SS Dhaliwal, Capt Shamsher Singh, Brig Raj Manchanda and Ranjit Pachnanda.

Sony Cup league cricket tourney

As many as 25 teams will take part in the Sony cup league cricket tournament organised by the Chandigarh Cricket Association (affiliated to HCA) from Thursday.

The participating teams have been divided into eight pools. The top two teams in each pool will qualify for the pre-quarter finals. The pools are, Pool A- Kelvinator, Dominator and Kalsi XI. Pool B-LIC, Chetna and Panther XI. Pool C-JJ Sports, CNS and Panchkula Sports club. Pool D-High Court, Elite CC and Combined XI; Pool E-AG (Haryana), JAL, Saurav XI and Youngs XI; Pool F-ICC, Punjab Civil Secretariat and SSP Network; Pool G-Sonnet CC, CY XI and Jesus XI; Pool H-Gymkhana, Gallant and GSS XI.

On Thursday the Sonnet CC will face Jesus XI while Panchkula Sports club will take on JJ Sports XI at the PEC grounds.

PUDA to re-open Phase VI pool

The PUDA has decided to re-open its swimming pool in Phase VI, SAS Nagar, from May 10 after carrying out the necessary repairs.

A meeting of the senior officers of PUDA was held here today to work out the modalities for the re-opening of its swimming pool in Phase VI this summer for public use.

Recruitment of the pool staff shall be done after giving an advertisement in the Press. The selection will be governed by a committee constituted by the Additional Chief Administrator, Estate Officer, Mohali and a senior engineer of the Mohali zone. The number of staff members, including life guards shall also be increased to cope with the rush during the peak season.

No sale of meat today

Chandigarh, April 24
The Chandigarh Administration issued orders tonight banning the slaughter of animals and sale of meat and meat products in Chandigarh on Thursday on account of Mahavir Jayanti. The day will be observed as ahimsa divas.

In today’s order it was not clear if consumption of meat products in functions or marriage parties was allowed or not.
