Public Health Dept workers up in arms
Our Correspondent

Sonepat, April 10
The agitating employees of the Public Health Department took out a procession here today to protest against the alleged highhandedness of the district and police administration and the arrest of the employees.

According to a report, carrying placards and raising anti-government slogans, they marched through the main bazaars and reached the mini-secretariat where they sat on a day’s dharna outside the deputy commissioner’s office.

A rally was also held, addressed by the leaders of various employees and trade unions. They demanded the immediate withdrawal of a criminal case against the arrested employees of the union.

Meanwhile, the police have released all the agitating employees of the department except a union leader who was also released on bail by the judicial magistrate on Tuesday.

The agitating employees erected the shamiana outside the office of the superintending engineer, Public Health and sat on an indefinite dharna to press for their demand.

The shamiana was removed on April 8 by the police following the orders of the deputy commissioner who, along with the SE, Public Health, visited the venue of the dharna and asked the employees to lift it immediately.

After their refusal, the DC directed the police to remove the shamiana and round up all the employees sitting on dharna. Thereupon, the police swung into action and rounded up all the employees and taken them to the police station where they were released in the evening barring a union leader.

Addressing the rally of the agitating employees, Mr Jalkaran Balhara, chairman of the Haryana Karamchari Maha Sangh and Mr Ved Vyas Arya, general secretary of the All Haryana PWD Mechanical Karamchari Union criticised the district and police authorities for uprooting the shamiana and whisking away the employees from the dharna site.

They warned that if the criminal cases against the employees were not withdrawn immediately, the agitation would be intensified. They urged the DC to direct the SE, Public Health, to fulfil the legitimate demands of the employees. The leaders of other trade unions also addressed the rally.

Tiger in action: Star Sports will telecast the complete coverage of the Masters from the Augusta National Golf Club throughout the first Major of the year, culminating with live coverage of the final round at 3 am on April 15 (India time). In defence of improvements in equipment technology, the famed club co-founded by the legendary Bobby Jones have re-designed nine of their equally legendary 18 holes and added 285 yards in length. Now measuring 7,270 yards in total length, Augusta 2002 is a radically different track to the layout where Tiger Woods won his second Masters title last year. The changes have been made largely to eliminate 300-yard drives and put the emphasis on strong iron play. Phil Mickelson, David Duvai and Woods all had a share of the lead at least once in the final round and it wasn’t until the last few holes that a clear winner was evident. OSR
