Farooq annoyed with BJP over Ayodhya

Jammu, March 14
The Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah, today expressed his annoyance with certain BJP leaders and the Solicitor-General of the country for having approached the apex court for permission for ‘shilanyas’ in the government-acquired land in Ayodhya.

Dr Abdullah told mediapersons here that it was unfortunate on the part of Mr Soli Sorabjee to have gone to the court without consulting the Union Government. He said there was a set precedence which prevented a Solicitor-General or Attorney-General or Advocate-General to approach court without consultation with the government.

In reply to a question, he indicated that he had no plans of quitting the NDA. Though the BJP was the main partner, but it was not the only unit of the alliance, he said.

He said the “initial wavering” shown by the BJP was wrong and the government should be bound by the court verdict. He said it was his impression that Mr Sorabjee had no approval from the BJP-led government.

Dr Abdullah said the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, faced no threat to his government. Without naming the Congress, he said that it cannot dislodge the NDA government.

Meanwhile, several Sikh organisations have demanded that the Prime Minister should resign on moral grounds as he had failed to tackle the Ayodhya issue properly.

Addressing a joint press conference here today, president of the state Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Mr S.S. Wazir, president of the state Akali Dal, Mr Jagdev Singh, president of the state unit of the AISSF, Mr Parmjit Singh and others said that the BJP-led NDA government had jeopardised the integrity of the country by pleading for the permission for ‘shilanyas’.

The leaders urged the Chief Minister to withdraw the party’s support to the NDA.

They demanded that the VHP and the Bajrang Dal leaders, involved in creating communal disharmony, be immediately arrested and tried under POTO.

Mr Wazir and Mr Jagdev Singh appealed to people to remain vigilant against communal forces which, they said, were ‘tarnishing’ the secular and democratic image of the country.

Pandemonium in J&K Assembly
Tribune News Service

Jammu, March 14
The state Assembly witnessed pandemonium when members belonging to the National Conference, the PDP and the Congress were on their feet the moment Speaker Abdul Ahad Vakil, started proceedings today.

These members, including the lone member from the CPIM, were seen protesting against the remarks made by a Lok Sabha member belonging to the VHP Mr Vinay Katiyar, about the holy relic in the Hazratbal shrine. They demanded the arrest of Mr Katiyar.

They said leaders like Katiyar were trying to complicate the already delicate situation arising out of the Ayodhya issue.

As the tempers ran high, the Speaker intervened and tried to restore order. He said while sympathising with the sentiments of the members he would appeal for tempers to be kept cool.

He said it was unfortunate that some leaders were allowed to kick up communal passions. He said the members should not do anything which would shake the foundation of the country.

Mr Vakil succeeded in pacifying the members, with the result today’s proceedings remained uninterrupted. The House later adopted the demands for grants of the ministries of Housing, Law and Parliamentary Affairs and Agriculture after extended discussions in which several opposition members, through cut motions, made series of demands and suggestions which were not accepted by the House.

Jammu, March 14
The 26-member Council of Ministers of the Jammu and Kashmir was expanded today by including Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari and Mr Govind Ram at a sudden and simple swearing in ceremony in Raj Bhavan. The Governor, Mr G.C. Saxena, administered the oath of secrecy to the two members of the Council of Ministers.

Molvi Ansari had been dropped from the Cabinet following his alleged involvement in a land scam in Sidhra satellite township over a year ago. Mr Govind Ram had been eased out of the Council of Ministers two years ago in a major Cabinet reshuffle.

The Molvi was given a clean chit by the K.K. Gupta Commission set up to inquire into the land scam. The report was tabled recently in the state Assembly and Dr Farooq lost no time to rehabilitate Molvi Ansari a close friend of the Chief Minister. The Molvi has been reinducted as a minister of Cabinet rank. While Mr Govind Ram has been reinducted as Minister of State and allotted the portfolio of Irrigation.

In the latest expansion Kashmiri Pandits continued to remain unrepresented in the Council of Ministers. The community was represented by Mr P.L. Handoo. He died a year ago.

Mr M.S. Tariq, MLA from Rajouri district, was also an aspirant for a seat in the Council of Ministers. Two years ago he was dropped as Minister of State for Education.

At least three police guards were injured when militants attacked the house of former state Congress President Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan at Lassana in Surankote last evening while elsewhere in the state two ruling National Conference leaders and a woman and her son were among 14 persons killed during the past 24 hours.

The security forces arrested nine militants and seized rifles, grenades and other arms and ammunition in the Kashmir valley during overnight raids, an official spokesman said here.

He said militants attacked the house of Mr Ramzan with automatic weapons last evening. However, the police guards posted there also effectively retaliated and repulsed the militant attack.

Three police personnel were injured in the clash, he said, and added the militants later managed to escape under the cover of darkness.

Official sources said militants hurled a hand grenade towards the security forces at Idgah this afternoon. However, the grenade missed the intended target and exploded on the roadside without causing any damage. UNITop
