1 more shifted to isolation ward
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, February 28
Purshotam, brother-in-law of Randhir, the first person to have died of plague in Himachal, was discharged by the PGI here today. Purshotam is the brother of Sulochna, Randhir’s wife, who too succumbed to the epidemic at the PGI. The condition of the rest of the five patients in the PGI isolation ward is said to be stable.

Simli, a resident of Sector 26, who was being treated at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, for common garden pneumonia was shifted to the isolation ward this morning after her son developed fever and cough.

The nodal officer for the GMCH-32, Dr Atul Sachdev, however, stated that the patient did not have epidiomolgical evidence of any contact with any of the patients suffering from plague, either from Himachal or Kansal.

‘‘Her isolation has been done as a precautionary measure,’’ he explained. The doctors and nurses attending on the patient have been directed to take prophylactic medicines.

The Punjab Health authorities, meanwhile, are in touch with 150 persons who may have come in contact with plague victim Krishan Singh of Reon Khurd village in Mansa district who was living in Kansal village before he died.

Stating this here today, the Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, Punjab, Mr Rajan Kashyap, said all possible contacts — a list of which had been provided by the PGI authorities and the UT Health Department — were being given prophylactic treatment. Teams of the National Institute of Communicable Disease (NICD) had visited Mansa and Kansal.

He said two suspected cases from Patti in Amritsar turned out to be those of tuberculosis. He said a specially designed programme of the PGI to check the epidemic had been forwarded to the civil surgeons for necessary action.Back

Doctor leaves no ‘stone’ unturned
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, February 28
In a rare case, a 10-year-old girl from Mubarakpur village in Patiala was reportedly operated upon for primary gall stones in the combined bile duct, though there were no stones in her gall bladder which had been showing signs of inflammation.

Dr Subhash Sharma, SMO of the Civil Hospital here, who had performed the operation, said Sonam, the child, had been showing symptoms of the disease for the past two years. “This problem is known to exist in women above 40 years of age. It is rare that the symptoms show at such an early age,” he said.

He said gall stones were present in the gall bladder, from where these slipped into the combined bile duct. In this case, the primary stones were present in the duct, but there were no stones in the bladder.

It was perhaps for this reason that doctors could not detect the problem for two years. She was admitted to the hospital on January 30. After being operated upon successfully, she was discharged on February 10, he said.Back

Upgradation of PGI professors put off
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, February 28
According to sources in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the interviews for direct appointment of professors to the PGI scheduled to be held between March 4 and March 7, 2002 have been postponed by an express order of the Union Minister of Health, Dr C.P. Thakur.

Sources say that the minister had been requested to postpone these interviews by the additional professors of the PGI who had appeared for the interview held for selection of professors under the Dhar Commission recommendations. They have asked that till the matter relating to their redesignation was not settled, no fresh, direct appointment to professor’s post be made.

The Governing Body of the PGI had taken a decision on the promotion of additional professors as professors under the Dhar Commission recommendations. It was decided that the promotions of these additional professors be cleared only after they gave an undertaking that they would not demand any additional benefit even if the the Court decided in favour of certain additional professors of the AIIMS claiming additional benefits in accordance with the Dhar recommendations.

On the request of the would be professors, the Minister also has directed the PGI administration to move rapidly to take necessary undertakings for not resorting to litigation and acceptance of the pay package offered by the Government to the additional professors being promoted as professors under the Dhar Scheme.
