MC initiates steps to tackle traffic mayhem
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, February 26
In the wake of massive increase in the number of vehicles and chaotic traffic conditions prevailing in the city, the Municipal Corporation is chalking out a comprehensive traffic-management plan to bring some semblance of order to the traffic mayhem through effective regulation and stricter enforcement.

Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, the MC Commissioner, Mr R.L. Kalsia, said at a review meeting of senior MC officials, which was also attended by the MC Traffic Adviser and Traffic Police officials, some of the most problematic areas were discussed to find a practical solution. The major traffic bottleneck on the entire stretch of Old G.T. Road from Jagraon Bridge to Chand Cinema, where the movement of traffic has been adversely affected due to commencement of construction work on the Elevated Road Project, was also discussed.

Mr Kalsia, who visited some of the problematic areas, including a portion of Old G.T. Road near Railway Station today, said the MC was thinking in terms of removing the footpaths on both the sides of the Old G.T. Road from Jagraon Bridge to Clock Tower to increase road width. In addition, the temporary structures on the roadside and footpaths, would also be removed immediately .

Till the time work on the Elevated Road Project was in progress, the Old G.T. Road road might be declared a no-parking zone and all vehicles would have to be parked at the notified parking places. The MC would also earmark at least one dozen parking zones in different city localities to discourage the prevalent practice of parking cars and scooters on the roadside. The Commissioner indicated that in view of the gravity of the situation, the civic body would have to use some harsh measures and sought the cooperation of the people to bring improvement in traffic management on the city roads.

In another bid to reduce congestion on this section of the National Highway, restrictions on the plying of cycle-rickshaws, hand-carts and other slow-moving vehicles, specially during peak hours in the morning and evening, were in the offing. The Traffic Police and the MC Traffic Adviser, he added, had been directed to study in detail the other traffic bottlenecks in the city and to come out with a detailed plan for restriction on the entry of heavy vehicles, specific parking sites for local mini buses, three-wheelers and traffic diversions.

Mr Kalsia further informed that the ongoing exercise for a comprehensive traffic management plan would be over by next week and the MC would implement it without any further delay.
