Hospital to cover rural areas
Our Correspondent

Gurgaon, February 25
Om Indu Jain Charitable Hospital at village Dhankot, famous for its social services, has tied up with St. Stephen’s Hospital, Delhi, to expand the facilities of its health services in rural areas.

To start with, these hospitals are jointly organising a camp for the physical challenged on February 28 at village Dhankot. In the camp, the experts from the St. Stephen’s Hospital will examine the patients and distribute artificial limbs, tri-cycle, wheel chair, crutches, etc free of cost to the deserving persons.

Mr D.D. Jain, the Chairman of the Om Indu Jain Charitable Trust, said that a state of art Artificial Limb Centre (ALC) would be opened at the Dhankot hospital, as a satellite centre of St. Stephen’s Hospital. The camps for the physical challenged would be organised regularly, said the chairman. St. Stephen’s Hospital is known for reconstruction surgeries, especially of post polio paralysis patients. If some of the patients need the operation, St Stephen’s Hospital would perform them free of cost at Delhi, said Mr Jain.

Dr Amod Kumar, Head of Department, Community Health Department, St Stephen Hospital said unsafe deliveries in the villages was a major public health problem. The large proportion of infant mortality is attributed to birth related complications. Dr Amod suggested that the deliveries should be conducted in well-equipped hospitals under trained medical supervision in hygienic atmosphere.

The details for the establishment of a Rural Birth Centre (RBC) at Om Indu Jain Hospital is also being worked out, where trained medical experts can help in the delivery of child, informed Mr Jain. St Stephen’s Hospital has agreed to provide referral services at concessional rates to the patients of eight villages, Dhankot, Kherki Majra, Chandu, Bhudhera, Kaliwas, Markdola and Ikbalpur, recommended by the Om Indu Jain Charitable hospital.

Om Indu Jain Hospital is presently providing OPD facilities for villagers in mother and child care, eye care, medicine, dental, Eye, Nose and Throat (ENT) and Orthopaedics, where more than 150 patients avail the services daily. New benchmark in cricket coaching
M.S.Unnikrishnan

Gurcharan Singh imparts the basic lessons of the gentleman’s game.
Cricket abecedarians: Gurcharan Singh imparts the basic lessons of the gentleman’s game.

New Delhi, February 25
Cricket is a national obsession in India and parents would do anything to make their wards ‘great’ cricket stars, in the mould of role models like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. There is, definitely, a lot of money to be made in cricket, but the greed for money and instant fame are forcing parents to push their children into cricket coaching, under the mistaken notion that every budding cricketer would become a great cricketer overnight!

The mesmerising impact of the game is evident from the sprouting of cricket academies like mushrooms all over the Capital.

In Delhi, where there is no crunch in resources and facilities for the game, there is a great craze for the game. And unscrupulous coaches and the so-called ‘cricket promoters’ have made a neat killing from such mindless cricket craze, to bring a bad name to the game, by ruthlessly exploiting gullible parents.

But there is one cricket academy in Delhi, which stands apart, amidst the cricket coaching ‘jungle’. When a ‘Drona’ and an ‘Arjuna’ join hands to establish a cricket academy, it has to be the best in the business, and nothing less.

No wonder, the once godforsaken Yamuna Vihar Sports Complex has now begun humming with cricket activity, thanks to the establishment of the Dronacharya Cricket Foundation there.

When Dronacharya cricket coach Gurcharan Singh, and his Arjuna-award-winning disciple, former Test spin wizard Maninder Singh, decided to set up the Dronacharya Cricket Foundation at the Yamuna Vihar Sports Complex, they were venturing into an uncharted and risky territory. But the duo brought their professional touch into play, and soon enough, the Dronacharya Cricket Foundation was teaming with cricket trainees. Whether the boys will play for the country or not is a question of destiny, but one thing will be sure— the talented will get an opportunity to bloom into their full potential under the expert guidance of Gurcharan Singh and Maninder Singh..

“We set up the Dronacharya Cricket Foundation to cater mainly to the need of cricket trainees in the trans-Yamuna area, who, otherwise, had to commute long distances to reach the Sports Authority of India (SAI) coaching centres at the Nehru Stadium, the National Stadium and the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium”, explained Gurcharan Singh, the force behind the venture.

After retiring from the SAI as director of coaching, Gurcharan Singh was restless to get back into “action” and he roped in his famous disciple, Maninder Singh, to establish the Dronacharya Cricket Foundation at the expansive Yamuna Vihar Sports Complex ground. The academy was inaugurated by former Union Home Minister Buta Singh on June 11, 2000.

The Delhi Development Authority was convinced about the viability of the project to allot the famous duo some space at the Yamuna Vihar stadium complex, Then Gurcharan and Maninder have hewen out a virtual cricket oasis from marshy land with wild growth.

This is perhaps the only cricket academy in Delhi, which boasts of eight pitches—two Astro-turfs, three grass turfs for pace bowlers, two for spinners and one cement pitch. No other cricket academy in Delhi possesses Astro-turf pitches, which are all-weather, as cricket can be played on it even during the rainy season. The pitches and ground are tended by four full-time groundsmen to keep them in good shape..

More than 120 trainees in four different age groups are being given coaching at the Dronacharya Foundation — over 40 boys in the 8 to 10 age group, over 20 in the 10 to 13 age group, over 15 in the 13 to 16 age group, and nearly 30 in the 16 and above age category. Besides, Gurcharan Singh and Maninder Singh, there are many other coaches like NIS-qualified Anil Kumar, Pradeep Jain, Arun Sethi, Hemant Sharma and physical trainer Rajbir to look after every aspect of coaching.

“We spare no effort to give the best coaching to our trainees”, pointed out Gurcharan Singh. Signs of success are already visible, as many of the boys of the Dronacharya Foundation have made their mark in junior cricket. Gaurav Malhotra was selected for the National Cricket Academy, Mridul Gupta played in the Ranji and Duleep Trophy, Tarun Gupta represented the Delhi Under-19 team, Amjad Vohra led the Delhi Under-14 in the School Games Federation of India Tournament, Sunny Bhatia represented the Delhi Under-16 team, Gurpreet Singh toured England and Sri Lanka and Ankit Kaishta toured England and Sri Lanka, with the Delhi Blues Cricket Team.

Gurcharan Singh sees a lot of potential in players like right-arm leg-break bowler and batsman Tarun Gupta, gooly leg-break bowler and all-rounder Ankit Kaistha, all-rounder Lohit Sharma, who is also an excellent fielder, and left-arm spinner and batsman Mayank Sethi, who, he thinks, can really go places with the right breaks and correct coaching.

Though the trainees have to pay for their coaching, the charges are not beyond the limit of many, and those boys who are talented and who cannot afford the coaching fees, are subsidised by the Foundation. Free memberships and facilities are provided to India A and B players, and a 50 per cent concession is provided to those who have played at the Ranji and above level, a 30 per cent concession to those who have represented in the BCCI/SGFI junior tournaments, and concession to brothers of already enrolled players.

“We should not be compared to other DDA cricket academies as there are vast differences in admission and fee norms”, observed Gurcharan Singh.
