PAU alumni meet on Feb 26

Ludhiana, February 22
The Alumni Association Meet of the College of Agriculture of Punjab Agricultural University will be held on February 26 and 27 on the PAU campus.

Dr Malwinder Singh Tiwana, Dean, College of Agriculture and head of the association, said a technical symposium would be held on February 26 and an eminent farm economist, Dr Karam Singh, would speak on ‘The WTO and Agriculture: Policy Dialogue for Punjab’. Dr S.S. Prihar, a renowned soil scientist, would speak on ‘Sustainability of Water Resources of Punjab’. Dr G.S. Kalkat, a former PAU VC, will preside over this session.

At the inaugural function to be presided over by Dr K.S. Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor, alumni and students who have excelled in research, extension, teaching, sport will be honoured. Sports events, poetical symposium and a cultural programme will also be held on the first day of the meet.

On the second day of the meet, there will be a lecture on ‘Yoga and Health’. Dr Tiwana said a plant breeder, Dr D.S. Athwal, will be awarded the Bishan Singh Samundri Medal for his contribution in the development of agriculture in Punjab.

Study prospects in US for PAU students

Students of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) will soon get a chance to join American universities while studying in the PAU or get a job there after finishing studies here.

The PAU has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with San Jose University of California (USA), according to which, 10 students will be chosen for scholarships and admissions in the American universities. There will be jobs there for the PAU pass-outs.

The MoU was signed today by the Vice-Chancellor of the PAU and Mr Jaswinder Singh Saini ‘Jassie Singh’, an alumnus of the PAU who owns an electronics industry with an annual turnover of about $ 250 million. Mr Jassie Singh has facilitated the signing of the MoU.

At a press conference here today, Mr Jassie Singh said he was being a mediator because he wanted students of his alma mater to get opportunities to study and work abroad. He said the project would include an exchange programme between the two universities and teachers of both sides would visit each other’s institution. He said the project would help the PAU visit the University of California and acquire latest knowledge. Visiting California teachers could educate students and teachers here.

The PAU VC, Dr Kirpal Singh Aulakh, said that a team of American teachers led by the VC and President of the University of California would visit the PAU in March end. The VC said, every year, 10 students would get to study abroad and the brilliant ones would get fee concessions.

He said that the first-year students of the PAU would be eligible for receiving this foreign education and the pass-outs were eligible for jobs in the USA. Students could take up postgraduate or research programmes in agriculture, agricultural engineering, home science, basic sciences and veterinary sciences.

Inter-college competitions

Ludhiana, February 22
Contests for shabad singing, poetry recitation, declamation, fine arts and home science events marked an inter-college cultural festival organised by the Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle here today.

Students from over 10 colleges participated in the festival. A declamation contest was held on topics related to drug addiction, nuclear weapons and communication technology. In the poetry recitation competition, students chose from the topics like Sikh history, gurmat philosophy, human integration and social problems. In the poster-making contest, students were given two topics, “Prayer” and “beware of drugs”. Topics for composition were “Baisakhi celebrations” and “motherly affection” while those for collage making were “female foeticide ”and “right way of life”.

Giani Bhagat Singh, president, Ramgarhia Educational Council, gave away prizes to the students.

The results of the contests are :

Shabad singing : Ramgarhia Girls College (1), Guru Nanak Girls College (2) and Mata Ganga Khalsa College, Kottan (3).

Declamation contest : Ramanpreet Singh from GGN Khalsa College (1), Rajwinder Kaur from Master Tara Singh College for Women (2) and Surinder Kaur from Guru Nanak Girls College (3).

Poetical recitation: Harsimrat Kaur from Ramgarhia Girls College (1), Narinder Kaur from Guru Nanak Girls College (2) and Simranjot Singh from GGN Khalsa College (3).

Poster making: Shikha from Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women (1), Inderdeep from Ramgarhia Girls College (2) and Amandeep from Devki Devi Jain Memorial College (3).

Composition: Gurasis from Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women (1), Harvinder from G.N. Girls College (2) and Avneet from DD Jain College (3).

Collage making: Sukhbir from AS College, Khanna (1), Dalwinder from Ramgarhia Girls’ College (2) and Harvinder from Guru Nanak Girls College (3).

Design making: Prabhjot from Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women (1), Ashminder from Ramgarhia Girls College (2), Saru from Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women (3).

Still life: Varinder from Government College for Women (1), Gaganpreet from Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women (2) and Navneet from Ramgarhia Girls College (3).

Rangoli: Gurpreet Kaur from Government College for Women (1), Kirandeep from Mai Bhago College for Women, Ramgarh (2), Jaswinder from Ramgarhia Girls College (3).

Cultural week at DMCH

A week-long colourful cultural week during which undergraduate students and interns of the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital will display their talent began yesterday in the Dumra Auditorium.

The event was inaugurated by Mr Prem Nath Gupta, secretary managing society of the DMCH and Director, Hero DMCH Heart Institute. In his address, Dr Daljit Singh, Dean, Academics, DMCH, said the event had especially been planned to promote art and culture among students and to give a boost to their talent. The programme started with a group-song competition. Dr Alka Dogra, Ms Nandita Gupta and Ms Kamapreet Kaur were the judges. The batch of 1999 stood first while the batch of 1998 stood second in the competition.

In the Antakshri competition, these were five teams comprising three participants. Dr Navjot Bajwa and Dr Sunil Juneja compered the show. Batch 99 stood first and batch 97 stood second. Not only this, guest items from audience was another attraction in which students and faculty also participated.

On February 22, debate, extempore and painting competition will be organised. On February 23, a quiz programme and an on-the-spot competition, ‘Ad fads’ will be organised. Choreography, skit and mono- acting competitions will also be organised.
