Plague cases: nodal officers appointed

The Chandigarh Administration today appointed one nodal officer each in the PGI, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, and General Hospital, Sector 16, to keep vigil on suspected plague cases and claimed there was no need to panic in the city and nearby areas.

Dr Subhash Verma, Professor and Head, General Medicine, PGI, Dr Atul Sachdeva, Professor and Head, General Medicine, GMCH, and Dr S.K. Bhandari, SMO (Medicine), General Hospital, have been appointed nodal officers.

Dr Verma can be contacted on phone numbers 747585 (office), 715894 (residence), Dr Sachdeva at 665545 (office), 662128 (residence) and Dr Bhandari at 700123 (residence) if anybody has fever, chills, headache, along with extreme degree of cough with bloody sputum and difficulty in breathing.

The Administration after meeting the hospital authorities said nine suspected cases, including two children, had been found till February13. According to the PGI, the children, however, have been found to be suffering from gasro-enteritis.

First patient, Sulochana, wife of Randhir Singh, admitted to the hospital on February 9 died on February 14. Rest of those suspected to be suffering from plague are recovering, the Administration said.

After February 13, no fresh case had come to city hospitals. Those admitted to the PGI have now been declared out of danger.

As a precautionary measure, suspected patients’ movement has been confined and those in their neighborhood have been given medicines to protect them against spread of disease.

The Administration said those coming from affected areas had been tested and nobody was tested positive. It said there was no need for prophylactic treatment.

The authorities in the Administration have held detailed discussions with PGI doctors who have been handling these cases. The doctors informed the Administration that the incubation period for this disease varies from two to six days.

Euphoria ends with rock

The four-day All-India medi-fest, Euphoria-2002, ended with a rock performance by Parkrama, an upcoming rock group, at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32 here today. More than 1000 students participated from more than 25 medical colleges of the region.

Dr Rahul Bajwa from SGG College, Amritsar, was crowned Mr Euphoria 2002 and Dr Priyanka from GMC, Amritsar, was crowned Ms Euphoria 2002.

PEC Sports Club win Slazer Cup

Chandigarh, February 17
A brilliant performance by Narinder Walia, who scored 53 runs off 44 deliveries, and Satish Chaudhary, who claimed four wickets for just 17 runs, enabled PEC Sports Club beat Panchkula Cricket Club by 74 runs to win the final of the second Salzer Cup League Cricket Tournament at the PEC grounds today.

165 runs for seven (Narinder Walia 53, Vishal Saini 30, Umesh Kaira 26, Vaneet Chawla 24, Dhirender Pal 3 for 19, Anil Sharma 2 for 21, Yogesh Kaushik 2 for 31).

PCC: 91 runs all out (Jai Kapil 51, Bharat Negi 15, Satish Chaudhary 4 for 17, Rajinder Chouhan 2 for 22, Umesh Kaira 2 for 18, Surendra Panwar 2 for 14).

School’s athletics meet: The athletics meet and annual prize distribution function of Aanchal Preparatory School, Phase XI, SAS Nagar, Sector 35, Chandigarh, was held today at the Sector 46 Sports Complex. Children of the LKG and higher classes took part in the march past. The salute was taken by Mr Sushil Sharma, Executive Director, PSIDC.

Races including chocolate-race for playgroup children, run-and-jump race, hop race, catch-me race for juniors, obstacle race, 50 meter race, three-legged race, relay race, high jump and long jump for seniors were conducted.

Awards for various academic achievements were also given for the various competitions held throughout the year. Tanmay, Harsimran, Palak, Deepika and Tanya bagged the maximum number of prizes in the senior category. Eshan Maavi, Akashi, Khyati and Kahna were adjudged the main prize winners among junior section.

Yoga camp: The week-long Bhavia Vishal Yoga Camp to celebrate the 83rd birth anniversary of the Yogi Raj Sadguru Devi Dayal Ji Maharaj came to a close today afternoon at Divya Yog Mandir, Shivalik Enclave, Manimajra. It was presided over by the chief guest, Mr Mahavir Singh Chauhan, SDM, Panchkula. Children displayed various yoga exercises.

Panchayat Sports Meet: The two-day annual fourth Panchayat Sports Meet was held today at the Cricket Stadium, Panchkula, which was inaugurated by Ms Jyoti Arora, Deputy Commissioner. She later stressed the need for inculcating sports in life.

In the meet held today, Sunil from Pinjore secured first place in 1,500 mts, while in women section, Poonam from Morni bagged first place. In men 400 mts event, Gopal from Raipur Rani clinched first place while in women section, Poonam of Morni secured the first place. In the volleyball match played between Barwala block and Raipur Rani. It was the former which beat the match. In another tie, Pinjore block outclassed Morni block. In kabaddi tie, Barwala block defeated Raipur Rani 53-22, Pinjore block beat Raipaur Rani 28-18. In the tug of war, Barwala got the better of Morni block.

New tariff for banners, balloons

Chandigarh, February 17
The Chandigarh Administration has amended the Chandigarh Advertisement Control Order, 1954, notifying charges for banners and balloons. An amount of Rs 50 per square foot per day will be charged upto a period of one week and 25 per cent extra for subsequent periods on banners on the roadside, as per the new provision.

An amount of Rs 100 per square foot (measured across the diameter) per day will be charged upto a period of one week and 25 per cent extra for subsequent periods.

The order has now been called the Chandigarh Advertisement Control (Amendment) Order, 2002.
