Reservation is not right, rules CAT
Chandigarh, February 1
“Article 16(1) of the Constitution of India does not create or recognise any fundamental right of reservation but infact provides that there shall be equality of opportunity for all citizens in matters relating to employment or appointment to any office in the state” the Central Administration Tribunal said in its order while rejecting a petition filed by five employees of the Accountant-General, Punjab.

HUDA resumes drive against encroachments
Panchkula, February 1
The Haryana Urban Development Authority today resumed its anti- encroachment drive, which was launched in December. The drive was resumed in Sector 18 Housing Board colony and in Mansa Devi Complex.

People of this sleepy village, hit by drought for years, went ecstatic when their hope of survival — an earthen dam constructed under the Haryana Community Forestry Project — was made operational today.

Man stabbed in poll violence
Naya Gaon, February 1
In an incident of poll violence, a person was stabbed in the election office of the Shiromani Akali Dal candidate in Naya Gaon here today. Tempers ran high when the relative of a supporter of the SAD candidate from the Morinda Assembly constituency was attacked, allegedly by supporters of the Congress candidate.

Couple killed in accident
SAS Nagar, February 1
Tragedy struck a house in Phase XI here when a couple died on the spot after being hit by a truck at the traffic lights near the PCA Stadium in Phase X this morning. The couple, both working in banks in Chandigarh, have left behind a 14-year-old boy, Arshdeep, and nine-year girl, Jasmeen.

Electronic post likely soon
Chandigarh, February 1
The Sector 17 General Post Office will shortly launch electronic post service here on the pattern of Maharashtra, Kerala, Goa and Punjab circles.
At a press conference here today, Mr S.P. Jain, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, said a proposal in this regard had already been sent to the Union Government and he hoped that it would be approved soon.

It is for India to decide whether it wants international intervention in the issue being faced with Pakistan. This was stated by Mr Frederic Grare, Director, French Centre for Human Sciences, New Delhi, during a lecture delivered at the Panjab University on ‘The Future of Indo-Pak Relations in the Light of India’s New International Aspirations’ here today.

The association had earlier fielded a rebel congress candidate, Mr Lakhwinder Singh, whose nomination papers was rejected during the scrutiny.

Mentally challenged restored to parents
Chandigarh, February 1
A mentally challenged child belonging to Ropar, who was found roaming about in the city over two weeks ago, was restored to his parents by the local police here today. He had reached the city after he mistakenly boarded a truck. The boy’s grandfather, Teja Singh, arrived here to take him after his identity was established and his family was contacted.

Festival of Gardens from Feb 22 to 24
Chandigarh, February 1
The Festival of Gardens will be held in the city from February 22 to 24. At a meeting held here to chalk out the plan, it was decided to constitute subcommittees to ensure smooth conduct of the festival, which forms part of the national calendar of events of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.

Narinder KumarA senior lecturer in the Statistics Department of Panjab University, Dr Narinder Kumar, deserves to be called a young achiever. While pursuing MPhil in statistics, he was appointed as an instructor on adhoc basis by the department. Later, he was promoted as a lecturer. Simultaneously, he also worked on his PhD theses and was awarded the doctoral degree in 1994.

Kaimbwala murder: 2 more arrests
Chandigarh, February 1
Two other accused in the Kaimbwala murder case — Raj Kumar, a resident of Navsatta village in Madhya Pradesh, and Biru Ram, a resident of Phavat village near Sohana — have been arrested by the Operations Cell of the Chandigarh police.

DC pulled up for irregularities
Chandigarh, February 1
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today came down heavily on Ambala’s Deputy Commissioner and Additional Deputy Commissioner for ordering the release of vehicles, taken into custody under the Police Act, on supardari to “persons having no concern with them”.

Bail in dowry harassment case
Chandigarh, February 1
The UT Additional and Sessions Judge, Mr R.C Godara, today granted bail to Pankaj Gupta, a city resident, in a case of dowry harassment. The applicant was granted bail on furnishing a bail bond for Rs 10, 000 with one surety.

Kang returns best card
Chandigarh, February 1
H.S. Kang returned a two-over card of 74 to win the best gross title in the below 50 age group of the Capt M.S. Sahota Memorial Golf Tournament at the Chandigarh Golf Club. His nearest rival was Saahir Singh with a gross card of 81.

Admn presses for retaining DC

The Chandigarh Administration has taken up the issue of granting one-year extension to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr M. Ramsekhar, with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. This is a fresh bid by the Administration to retain the services of the DC for one more year, as he is in the middle of implementing recently introduced building bylaws.
