Camp on cancer awareness

Chandigarh, January 25
A camp on cancer awareness, early detection and palliative care was inaugurated at the Urban Health Centre, Sector 44, by Dr S.B.S. Mann, Director-Principal, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32 here today.

Organised by the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology, GMCH, the camp aimed at creating awareness among people an how to prevent cancer. In India eight lakh people are diagnosed with cancer each year.

Many persons were screened for malignancy. An exhibition on cancer-related material was also put up at the centre.

Among those present on the occasion were Dr Subhash Singh, Dr Ibha Kumari, Dr A.S.Bawa, Dr Bansal, Dr Sapna Manocha, Dr Jasmeet Kaur, Dr Shailja, Dr Jasleen Kaur, Dr B.D. Gupta, Prof Harsh Mohan, Prof A.K. Janmeja, Prof H.M. Swami, Prof Atul Sachdev, Prof N.K. Goel, Dr Sudesh Arya, Dr Rajeev Gupta and Mr Lalit M. Aggarwal.

Chest diseases wing opened

Other than slight confusion which marks the first day of any venture, both patients and the hospital staff welcomed the starting of a separate chest diseases wing at the Sector 22 poly clinic here today.

Inaugurating the wing and direct observation therapy short course (DOTS) centre, the Punjab Governor and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh, Lieut. Gen. JFR Jacob, said the Director, Health Services, should co-ordinate with NGOs and private practitioners and organise screening camps in slums and congested areas to detect tuberculosis.

Anti-leprosy campaign

The District Leprosy Society, UT, will organise a house-to-house search campaign to detect hidden leprosy cases in colony No 5 on Sunday.

The search activity is part of the leprosy elimination campaign that will be completed on the Anti-Leprosy Day being observed on January, 30.

Mountain bike cycling championship

Gurnoor Kang was the star rider of the day when she clinched top slot in two events in the second National Mountain Bike Cycling Championships for senior, junior and sub-junior boys and girls section, which began here at the Kaimbala village slopes today morning. Earlier, Prof K.N. Pathak, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, inaugurated the meet.

He also flagged off the cross-country race for boys. A large number of adjoining villagers had gathered along the narrow path.

Results: cross-country mass start races: Four-lap sub-junior boys under-16: Kulbir Singh (Haryana) time — 33 minutes 22.84 seconds; Gaganbir Singh (Chandigarh) 2, Amandeep Singh (Punjab) 3.

Six-lap sub-junior boys under-18 years: Wayenban Prem Chand (Manipur)1, time — 49 minutes 35.28 seconds 1, Varinder Singh (Haryana) 2, Neeraj (Haryana) 3.

Two-lap sub-junior girls under-16 years: Gurnoor Kang (Chandigarh)1, time — 19 minutes 20.37 seconds, Ashi (Chandigarh) 2, Nehchal Deep Kaur (Chandigarh) 3. Four-lap sub-junior girls under-18 years: Gurnoor Kang (Chandigarh) 1, time — 38 minutes 19.76 seconds; Baljeet Kaur (Haryana) 2, Devinder Kaur (Haryana) 3.

Basketball selection trials

The Chandigarh Basketball Association will hold the selection trials for boys and girls in under-21 section on January 26 at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41.

DAV College win

DAV College, Sector 10, outclassed GGD SD College, Sector 32 by three wickets in the fifth BIS and Percept Kapil Dev Trophy and organised by the UT Cricket Association here today.

Tribune Carom tourney

On the final day of The Tribune Youth Club Carom Tournament played here, Vinay Chaudhary and Harbinder outscored V.P. Gupta and Naveen Gureja 29-11 in mens doubles final. In the match for third place, Vijay and Monu Sharma beat Tilak Raj and Gopal 19-15.

Results: Vinay Chaudhary and Harbinder: first , V.P. Gupta and Naveen Gureja second, Vijay and Monu Sharma third.

R-Day function

The Chandigarh YMCA Total Tennis Academy will celebrate the 52nd Republic Day tomorrow on the Sector 11 premises with an exhibition tennis match and karate demonstration by trainees of the academy and shot gun-karate-do dojo of the YMCA, Chandigarh along with non-equipment games after the by flag-hoisting ceremony. Mr Vinod Sawhney, Managing Director SPICE Telecom, will be the chief guest on the occasion. The function will be followed by an eye and dental check-up camp.

Tennis tourney

Panjab University secured fourth place in the North-East Zone Inter-University Tennis Tournament, which concluded here this evening at the Panjab University grounds. In this meet, Delhi University got first place, GND University, Amritsar came second, while AMU, Aligarh, finished third place.

Football championship

The Chandigarh Football Association will organise Chandigarh State Senior Football Championship (men) for Rajeshwar Bhardwaj memorial trophy from February 3 to 8. Entries close with Mr Ravinder Talwar, president CFA on January 30. The meet will be played as per the rules of the All-India Football Federation.

HUDA auction fetches 4.52 cr

Panchkula, January 25
The auction of sites or schools, colleges , nursing homes and clinics in various sectors of the township by the Haryana Development Urban Authority fetched over Rs 4.52 crore today.

As many as five sites of schools/colleges in Sectors 2, 20, 21, 25 and 26 were auctioned with the reserve price being fixed at Rs 2828. 55 per square meter. The auction of a built-up nursery school (Vijay Model School) in Sector 17 here fetched Rs 73. 32 lakh.

Five sites for nursing homes, including two sites for clinics in Sector 15, were auctioned at a reserve price of Rs 5657. 10 per square meter. Nursing home sites that have been auctioned today are located in Sectors 11, 12-A and 14.
