10 students get awards

Ludhiana, January 19
The Swami Vivekanand Study Circle today organised a function to give away Role Model Award to 10 students from Punjab at the Government College for Women.

Prof Vinay Sofat, secretary, Ludhiana chapter, stated that the Circle had decided to honour one student from every educational institution in the city.

The 10 students who got the award were: Gunjeet, Home Science College, PAU; Anu Kalia, College of Basic Sciences, PAU; Deepak Sharma, Government College for Boys, Ludhiana; Gagandeep Kaur, G.N. Khalsa College, Model Town, Ludhiana; Ekta Sahota, Arya College, Nawan Shehar; Rana Chand, K.L.S.D. College for Boys, Ludhiana, D.D. Jain College, Ludhiana, Rohini Pahwa, Government College for Women, Ludhiana, Sandeepa Singh, Shazada College, Amritsar and Hima Sharma of SDP College, Ludhiana.

LDCA XI, Star Paradise Club enter quarterfinals

LDCA XI and Star Paradise Club registered emphatic victories in their respective matches to enter the quarterfinals of the 6th Rajeev Gandhi and Ist Master Vishav Walia Memorial Cricket Tournament being played at Daresi ground, here today.

In the match between Star Paradise Club and Fighter Club, the latter won the toss and elected to bat first. In the allotted 20 overs they scored 144 runs after losing 6 wickets. Star Paradise Club made the required runs in losing two wickets in just 16 overs.

Brief scores: Fighter Club 144 for 6 (Jit Panesar 44, Sunil 25 not out, Vikas 22, Shankar 3 for 27and Rohin 1 for 17) Star Paradise Club 148 for 2 (Shabu 63 not out, Soni 40, Sunil 2 for 30 and Shaminder 1 for 31)

In the match played yesterday, Jimmy Shankar (55) and Varun Gupta (45) helped LDCA XI to script an easy 50-run victory against SP Club in the inaugural match of the tournament.

SP Club won the toss and invited LDCA XI to bat first. LDCA scored 194 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in the quota of overs. Apart from Jimmy Shankar and Varun Gupta the other notable scorer was Karan Goel, who hit 21 runs.

In reply, SP Club, despite useful innings from Anu (49) and Salil (24), could muster 144 runs after losing seven wickets.

Earlier, Mr Sat Paul Bawa, president, Ramlila Committee, Ludhiana, inaugurated the tournament in which as many as 16 teams are taking part. Mr Prem Prashar and Mr Kewal Krishan Marwaha, chairman and vice-president, respectively, of the committee were also present.

Brief scores: LDCA XI-194 for 6 (Jimmy Shankar 55, Varun Gupta 45, Karan Goel 21, Prince 2 for 39, Rahul 2 for 25 and Sachin 2 for 17).

SP Club: 144 for 7 (Anu 49, Salil 24, Prince 11, Rakesh Saini 3 for 11 and Sachin 2 for 17)

Sports festival begins

The 16th annual sports festival organised by the Mata Sahib Kaur Sports and Youth Welfare Club got off to a colourful start at Jarkhar village, about 25 km from here, today. A cultural programme by school students was presented on this occasion. Malwai giddha, bhangra marked the opening ceremony. Mr Jagdish Singh Garcha, Minister for Technical Education, Punjab, inaugurated this 3-day festival.

In Kabaddi (52 kg) Bhilla village played Kalas Kalan 16-10 to win the trophy. In hockey (Women), Kila Raipur and SIL, Academy played a goalless draw. In the men section, Punjab and Sind Bank outplayed Border Hawks, Amritsar 2-1. Yudhvir Singh scored a brace for the winners while the lone goal for the losers was scored by Mandep Singh. In the second match, Sarih XI defeated Bahadurgarh in an identical fashion (2-1). Jaswant struck twice for Sarih XI while Jaspal Singh converted a penalty corner into the goal for Bahadurgarh.

In dog races, ‘Rocky Kala’ owned by Bhola Singh of Sakandarpura emerged victorious. ‘Rosy’ of Amandeep Singh Mohi finished second and ‘Fire Fighter’ of Bhupinder Singh of Dhoolkot came third.
