ETT students go on strike today
Bhushan Sood

Amloh, September 16
Students of all District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET) will go on strike from tomorrow in protest against the attitude of the Punjab Government for making appointments of teachers on contractual basis, on Rs 2,000 per month, on the vacant posts of ETT teachers, contrary to the decision of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Union. According to the press note, the deputation of the union had met the Deputy Commissioner Ferozepore, who had formed a committee to appoint ‘sikhya karmis’. Though the DC was told that the High Court has decided against such appointments of ‘sikhya karmis’, the formed a committee for the appointment of teachers on contractual basis.

The union has decided to observe strike in all the 17 institutions in the state and stage a dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Ferozepore on September 17.

The union was critical of the Punjab Government which has spent lakhs of rupees to get the selected students trained to provide better education in the state, but after their training they were not appointed on the vacant posts. The ‘sikhya karmis’ scheme will lower the standard of education as they were not fully trained for the job. It will be a great injustice both to the students and trained teachers.

In case, the government fails to fulfill its promise, the union will intensify the agitation.
