Sikhs stage protest against terrorism Jammu, September 16 President Gurdwara Prabandhak Board
S. S.
Wazir, President Shiromani Akali Dal, Mr Gurdev Singh and Mr Rangil Singh, a former minister, and others condemned the recent terrorist strikes against key targets in the USA and said this tragic incident indicated that terrorism had assumed global dimensions and needed to be tackled on a war footing. While supporting the American resolve to win a war against terrorism, the Sikh leaders appealed to the American President, Mr George W. Bush, and his administration to take effective measures to protect the lives and property of the Indian minorities in the USA. The leaders expressed concern at the series of attacks on Sikhs in the USA in recent days and said the community members were as innocent as any other American citizen. Mr Rangil Singh said time had come for all peace-loving countries and those nations that believed in secularism and democracy to join hands and root out the menace of terrorism in the world. Mr S.S. Wazir said Sikhs all over the world had been against terrorism and suggested to the Government of India to take up the matter of attacks on Sikhs in the USA with the US Government. He said any war against terrorism should not be misconstrued as a battle against any particular religion because terrorists and killers of innocent persons “have no religion”. Mr Gurdev Singh said, “The Sikhs have been a victim of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir” and referred to the Chattisinghpora massacre in which more than 35 Sikhs were killed. He said whatever support and cooperation any government wanted from the Sikhs for tackling terrorism would be made available. The demonstrators observed a two-minute silence to pay homage to all those killed in terrorist strikes, whether in the USA or in Jammu and Kashmir. They also supported the Central Government’s decision to give cooperation to the US Government for fighting terrorism. |
