Advani hints at joint action with USA
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 14
Union Home Minister L.K. Advani today hinted at a possible joint action against the Islamic fundamentalist terrorism saying that India has in place Joint Working Groups (JWG) with the USA and four other nations to fight terrorism.

“We have already set up JWGs against terrorism with the USA, Canada, the UK, Germany and Israel and have been making systematic efforts to forge ties with other democratic countries in the past few years,” Mr Advani told mediapersons here on the sidelines of a “Hindi Divas” function at Vigyan Bhavan.

The Home Minister said “possibly, the USA has experienced terrorism now, only in the 21st century. But we, in India, had witnessed a trailer (of the coordinated terror strikes) in March 1993 in Mumbai when serial blasts took a toll of 253 innocent lives.”

Without naming Osama bin Laden, Mr Advani said “today, only one person is being named as responsible (for the attacks on USA) and there is one country (Afghanistan) which is providing him shelter.”

“After the 1993 Mumbai blasts, India had also held one person responsible and told the world that there is one country which is providing him refuge,” Mr Advani said while apparently referring to Dawood Ibrahim and shelter given to him by Pakistan.

“The target of terrorism is the civil society and democracy and the realisation that we are not the only target will go a long way in wiping out terrorism,” Mr Advani said.

Earlier, speaking at the ‘Hindi Divas’ function, the Home Minister stressed that the spread and nurturing of the Hindi language cannot be done by opposing English.

“Hindi cannot be given its due place just by opposing English. The increase usage of Hindi should act as a reflection of the self-respect of our nation,” he said launching a special high-level digital course in the language.

Mr Advani said like Hindi, English language was also opposed in England in the 18th century “when debates in the House of Common were held in English but the laws were passed in Latin.”

Grain storage to be increased in Punjab
R. Suryamurthy
Tribune News Service

Kashipur, (Orissa), September 14
The Union Minister of Food, Consumer Affairs and Civil Supplies, Mr Shanta Kumar, today indicated that the storage capacity of grains in Punjab and Haryana would be augmented soon to meet the increased demand of the farmers.

“These two states have experienced bumper production and the storage capacity of grains there would be increased soon to meet the demands of the farmers,” Mr Shanta Kumar told The Tribune here.

Admitting that lack of storage facility is a problem, he said, “this would not come in the way of procurement of food grains.”

The minister said the government had come up with a national food storage policy and had even allowed private sector participation in the sector.

After touring the villages where “starvation” deaths had reportedly taken place, Mr Shanta Kumar categorically stated that these people did not die of starvation.

“It would be really bad if somebody died of starvation in the country when the godowns have no place to store grains and we already have over 60 million tonnes of buffer stocks,” he said.

Mr Shanta Kumar also launched the Antodaya Anna Yojana, which he hoped would bring relief to people. The yojana would provide 25 kg rice at Rs 3 per kg to every family each month.

The scheme is being launched in the entire state, which would benefit 5.5 lakh families.
