Advani hints at joint action with
USA New Delhi, September 14 “We have already set up JWGs against terrorism with the USA, Canada, the UK, Germany and Israel and have been making systematic efforts to forge ties with other democratic
countries in the past few years,” Mr Advani told mediapersons here on the sidelines of a “Hindi Divas” function at Vigyan Bhavan. The Home Minister said “possibly, the USA has experienced terrorism now, only in the 21st century. But we, in India, had witnessed a trailer (of the coordinated terror strikes) in March 1993 in Mumbai when serial blasts took a toll of 253 innocent lives.” Without naming Osama bin Laden, Mr Advani said “today, only one person is being named as responsible (for the attacks on USA) and there is one country (Afghanistan) which is providing him shelter.” “After the 1993 Mumbai blasts, India had also held one person responsible and told the world that there is one country which is providing him refuge,” Mr Advani said while apparently referring to Dawood Ibrahim and shelter given to him by Pakistan. “The target of terrorism is the civil society and democracy and the realisation that we are not the only target will go a long way in wiping out terrorism,” Mr Advani said. Earlier, speaking at the ‘Hindi Divas’ function, the Home Minister stressed that the spread and nurturing of the Hindi language cannot be done by opposing English. “Hindi cannot be given its due place just by opposing English. The increase usage of Hindi should act as a reflection of the self-respect of our nation,” he said launching a special high-level digital course in the language. Mr Advani said like Hindi, English language was also opposed in England in the 18th century “when debates in the House of Common were held in English but the laws were passed in Latin.” |
India, USA must work in tandem: President New Delhi, September 14 Accepting credentials from new US Ambassador Robert D Blackwill, Mr Narayanan said: “It is with a sense of grief and outrage that I convey my condolence and sympathy for the immense tragedy that has resulted from the barbaric terrorist attack on the USA.” New Chinese Ambassador Hua Junduo, High Commissioner of New Zealand, Ms Caroline McDonald and High Commissioner of Zambia Moses Musonda also presented their credentials to the President. Accepting the credentials of New Zealand’s new High Commissioner, the President said the two countries enjoyed cordial and friendly relations. |
CCS to review
situation today New Delhi, September 14 Reports here said the CCS is scheduled to meet tomorrow after Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee updates leaders of opposition parties regarding the prevailing security situation. The Prime Minister has convened a meeting with the opposition leaders tomorrow morning. Except for a break today, the CCS has been reviewing the prevailing security scenario on a day-to-day basis. It had yesterday decided to offer all operational help to the USA in the event of it mounting a strike against the Saudi outlaw Osama bin Laden’s hideouts in Afghanistan. It unanimously decided to offer all cooperation and facilities for any US military operation in its pursuit of the masterminds of the carnage in New York and Washington DC. The CCS is now expected to discuss various logistical support India can offer and has apparently sought details on this from the three services. The chiefs of the three services are expected to be present at the meeting tomorrow. |

Don’t get involved
in US action: CPM New Delhi, September 14 The CPM politburo in a statement said while “the Indian government can respond to any lawful request of the USA to provide any relevant information it has regarding terrorist activities which may have a bearing on the terrorist actions in the USA. But to involve India in any US military action is unacceptable and will be strongly opposed by all patriotic Indians”. Reiterating its strong condemnation of the terrorist attacks in the USA on September 11, the politburo said the Bush administration declaration of war, however, was tentamount to arrogation of right “to trample upon the UN charter and violate the sovereignty of any country”. |

Grain storage to be
increased in Punjab Kashipur, (Orissa), September 14 “These two states have experienced bumper production and the storage capacity of grains there would be increased soon to meet the demands of the farmers,” Mr Shanta Kumar told The Tribune here. Admitting that lack of storage facility is a problem, he said, “this would not come in the way of procurement of food grains.” The minister said the government had come up with a national food storage policy and had even allowed private sector participation in the sector. After touring the villages where “starvation” deaths had reportedly taken place, Mr Shanta Kumar categorically stated that these people did not die of starvation. “It would be really bad if somebody died of starvation in the country when the godowns have no place to store grains and we already have over 60 million tonnes of buffer stocks,” he said. Mr Shanta Kumar also launched the Antodaya Anna Yojana, which he hoped would bring relief to people. The yojana would provide 25 kg rice at Rs 3 per kg to every family each month. The scheme is being launched in the entire state, which would benefit 5.5 lakh families. |
‘Reveal Bhopal gas composition’ Kolkata, September 14 Lapierre, who released his first person account on the event “It Was Five Past Midnight in Bhopal’, said the company must reveal the exact composition immediately to help scientists develop medicines for those affected by the catastrophic after-effects of the Union Carbide gas leak. “They have identified only two of the gases in the methyl iso cyanide complex — phosgene and the lethal cyanide acid. There are 16 to 18 other gases that have not yet been identified,” he told a press conference after releasing the book co-authored with his journalist Nephew Javier Moro.
