A ward of happiness

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 14
For little patients admitted to the Gastroenterology Ward of the PGI, there is something beyond doctors, vaccines, nurses and needles. Nurses and the other staff of the ward have decorated a separate ward room in bright colours to keep ailing children in good spirits.

As soon as you enter the room, happiness envelopes you. Instead of grumbling through days of illness, children play games and paint.

Nurse Santosh Singla, who along with others is responsible for this creation, says that this provides children and their parents with a much-needed reprieve from the usual drabness of the hospital. “We also celebrate festivals in the ward, so that, children who are away from their homes, do not feel deprived and neglected,” she says. The ward has three rooms, each with six beds comprising its paediatric section. At any given day, about 20 children are admitted to these wards.

Colourful chairs and tricycles keep these children entertained. For a little grown-up children like nine-year-old Ajay of Manesar and Shilkha, 9, of Bijnour, there is a part-time teacher who visits the ward every evening. In the day, nurses and the other staff members take turns in taking care of the children and the room, says Ms Singla.

Well-wishers and social workers donate toys, games, chairs and tricycles, besides painting walls for the ward. The textbooks have been donated by principals of various local schools.

Most children who are in the ward are suffering from portal vein hypertension, blockage of ducts and various other gastrointestinal problems. Due to the risk of hospital-acquired infections, the department tries to treat and discharge these children as early as possible.

However, most of them still have to stay for at least three to four weeks. Then, there are those who have to keep coming back for medical tests and reviews. They have a bond with the room.
