Delhi team leads in bridge championship

Ludhiana, September 9
On the penultimate day of the National Open Bridge Championship being held here, Pals, Delhi, which were leading the field yesterday continued their supremacy to top the table with 169 victory points (VPs) at the end of the eighth round and qualified for the quarterfinals.

Jadoun, Kanpur, which were not in the first 10 leading teams yesterday, gave a superlative performance today to garner 147 VPs to finish second. Other teams which advanced to the quarterfinals include Aligarh Blues, Boat House Club of Nainital, Kamalakar Rao of Hyderabad, Jains of Meerut, ACGW of Delhi and Sidhus of Chandigarh The eight teams have been divided into two groups. These will now compete in the elimination stage on round-robin of three matches of 12 boards to decide the two finalists. The top team of each group will secure a berth in the final to be played tomorrow. The two groups consists of teams — (Group A) Pals, Delhi, Boat House Club, Nainital, Kamalakar, Hyderabad and Sidhus, Chandigarh, (Group B) Jadoun of Kanpur, Aligarh Blues, Jains of Meerut and ACGW of Delhi.

The teams which collected victory points to enter the last eight positions after eight rounds were as follows:- Pals Delhi 169 VP, Jadoun, Kanpur 147 VP, Aligarh Blues 145 VP, Boat House Club, Nainital 144 VP, Kamalakar Rao, Hyderabad 143VP, Jains of Meerut 143 VP, ACGW of Delhi 138 VP and Sidhus of Chandigarh 136 VP.

District badminton meet

Balreet Sandhu, a student of GGNI, Model Town, will meet Ashwinder Kaur of Punjab Agricultural University in the junior girls’ final of the Ludhiana District Badminton Championship currently held at Shastri Badminton Hall, Guru Nanak Stadium, here.

In the semi-finals, Balreet Sandhu faced a stiff resistance from Sukhpreet Kaur before emerging victorious 7-4,5-7,7-4 and 7-2, while Ashwinder Kaur defeated Mandeep Mangat 2-7,7-2,4-7,7-2 and 7-2.

Earlier, Mr K.R. Lakhanpal, Principal Secretary, Finance, inaugurated the championship in which more than 150 players are participating.

National yoga championship

Ludhiana, September 9
The Punjab Yog Krida Sangh and the Cosmic Yoga Foundation under the aegis of the Yoga Confederation of India will organise a two-day National Yoga Championship here at the community centre in Agar Nagar on September 10 and 11.

According to a press note issued by Swami Aditya Chaitanya, organising secretary of this championship, yoga experts and professionals from all over the country will take part in this mega event. A national yoga march will also be carried out to mark the beginning of the championship, which will start from the community centre at 8.30 am tomorrow, the note said.
