England follow on in 5th Test London, August 26 Michael Atherton, probably playing in his final Test, was the one wicket to fall in the second innings, dismissed for the 19th time in his 115-Test career by Glenn McGrath. Atherton was given a standing ovation by the crowd and the Australian players as he trudged off after edging a catch to Shane Warne at first slip for nine. Marcus Trescothick was on 20 not out and Mark Butcher on 11. Earlier, the home team, replying to Australia’s formidable 641 for four declared, had fallen just 10 runs short of saving the follow-on as they were dismissed for 432, Mark Ramprakash making 133 and Warne finishing with seven wickets and his best Test bowling figures on English soil. England had resumed on 409 for eight, still needing 33 to avoid the follow-on. Ramprakash, on 124 overnight, and Darren Gough had taken their ninth-wicket stand on to 74 before McGrath broke through. Ramprakash’s six-hour innings ended with the total on 424 when he tried to force the pace bowler through the off-side off the back foot, only to edge a catch to wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist. He hit 18 fours in his 232-ball knock. Gough, who had struck McGrath for four through the covers with the shot of the morning, should have been caught without a run being added when he edged Warne to second slip, only for Steve Waugh to put down a regulation chance, the Australian captain almost hurling the ball to the ground in disgust. The arrival of number 11 Phil Tufnell, one of cricket’s premier ‘rabbits’, was greeted by an ironic roar of approval from the packed crowd at The Oval. But the left-arm spinner hung around until Gough, on 24, became Warne’s seventh victim. He tried to drive Warne, the ball dribbling through bat and pad for Gilchrist to complete the stumping for his 100th test dismissal, reaching the landmark in his 22nd match, faster than any other gloveman in Test history. Warne, who became only the sixth bowler to take 400 Test wickets yesterday, completed figures of seven for 165 from 44.2 overs. Reuters

Gough opts out of India tour London, August 26 The Yorkshire player says he is exhausted but England’s management insist only players who face India in the Test series later this year can be considered for the Tests against the Kiwis in March. “The management and I have agreed to disagree,” Gough told The News of The World. “I don’t see why I can’t go to New Zealand for the Tests after missing the India series. They feel differently and they call the shots.” Gough is likely to fall victim to the ECB’s decision to only offer two winter contracts. The first takes in the Tests in India later this year and the New Zealand Tests in March and April. The second covers the two five-match one-day series in India and New Zealand in January and February. The ECB insist they will not split the test contracts so because Gough wants to miss India, they will not take him to New Zealand. “I’m not going to attack the board. That wouldn’t be a sensible career move. Let’s just say, I’m more than a little disappointed that it’s come to this.” “I want to continue to play for England at Test and one-day level through to the next Ashes and World Cup. “To do that I need a decent break and I’ve decided to stay at home for the rest of the year. That’s my decision. “It’s a simple choice. Do I keep going until I break down or am exhausted? Or do I take a break now in the hope being around for the next 18 months? “I’m happy to be part of the one-day squad this winter in India and New Zealand. I hope the selectors still want me,” he said.

Kumble writes It was a very satisfying victory for the Indians in the end. This team has shown a lot of character in the past few months to come back after being down and out. It was important for the senior players to lead the way in such times with Saurav, Rahul and Prasad doing just that. The Indian bowlers came back well to restrict Sri Lanka to 221 runs in the second innings. Zaheer bowled with a lot of fire and pace, which brought about the downfall of the Sri Lankan skipper, giving a boost to the Indians. This four-wicket haul will give a lot of confidence to Zaheer, from whom the team can expect a lot more in the future. He is a fine prospect and has shown the right temperament in his short career at the International level. The combination of Zaheer and Prasad worked well in tendem, with the latter giving an exhibition of superb seam bowling to pick up another five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Having played most of our cricket together both for India and Karnataka, one quality that has given him all the success is his diligence and a never-say-die attitude. Well done Venky, keep it up! The bowling efforts were equally complemented by brilliant catching, Dighe’s effort standing out. However one aspect the bowlers will be determined to make amends would be while bowling at the tail, especially at Murali. Albeit Harbhajan did not bowl much in this Test, his effort with the bat to score a breezy 44 runs was crucial considering the context of the game. Our batsmen took a cue from Harbhajan’s innings and went about scoring the required runs in the second innings positively. Although Das was out early, Rahul and Ramesh’s fifty-run partnership was timely. Rahul, who was eventually out to Murali played him superbly to score a brilliant 75 runs. His innings took the sting our of the Lankan attack as the stood like a wall. His presence would surely have given a lot of confidence to skipper Sourav and these two have had wonderful partnerships in the past but none as crucial as this one. Sourav’s effort with the ball would have also helped in his confidence. Both these batsmen had some anxious moments but it was their positive body language which brought about the victory. Sourav grew in confidence with each run and played superbly to remain undefeated till the end. He must have had a few jitters after Rahul’s wicket but Kaif showed a lot of promise and confidence to remain with his skipper till the end. A century would have been the icing on the cake for Sourav but this knock is certainly one of his best as it came at a time when he was under everybody’s scrutiny.

Kunjarani tests positive New Delhi, August 26 Kunjarani’s A sample showed presence of banned drug ‘strychnine’ during random tests carried out during the July 12-17 Senior Asian Weightlifting Championships held at Jeon Ju, South Korea, highly-placed sources in the Indian Weightlifting Federation told PTI here today. “We have received an intimation from the international body saying she has been suspended for six months. They have informed us that if Kunjarani wants her B sample to be tested, she must submit in writing by Wednesday (August 29),” the sources said. Kunjarani, who was part of a three-member Indian team cleared personally by Sports Minister Uma Bharati for participation at the event, had won the gold in the 48 kg category. The results now stand annuled and the Asian Weightlifting Federation has asked the IWF to return her medal immediately. Balbeer Singh Bhatia, one of the two members of the ad-hoc committee running the IWF, when contacted, said, “our medal chances for the Afro-Asian Games have received a major blow with this sad news. She was our biggest hope as she had been performing consistently of late”. The IWF, thrown into disarray after its chief Gopal Kanra was accused of embezzlement of funds, was revived on August 9 after remaining suspended from April 17 to July 31. A two-member ad-hoc committee comprising Mr Bhatia and R.R Singh was set up to run the body. Mr Bhatia squarely blamed the Sports Authority of India coach, S.C. Goyel, for dereliction of duty. “It was primarily the coach’s job to see that all the members of the Indian team were tested before leaving the country,” he said. “According to the rules, every sportsperson, before leaving the country for any international event, should be tested. In this case all three members — Kunjarani Devi, Pratima Kumari and Nandani Devi — were here in Delhi for five days and the coach should have arranged for the mandatory testing,” he said. There has been an instance, Mr Bhatia said, when a sportsperson returned a
positive test on the day he was to leave for World Weightlifting Championships and was subsequently not allowed to participate.

Venus wins title New Haven, (USA), August 26 “I hate to lose. I guess I don’t like going into the Open with a loss,” Williams said. “I manage to play my best here.” She is the first woman with three consecutive titles at this 34-year-old tournament, formerly known as the US Hardcourt Championships. Williams also beat Davenport in straight sets in the 1999 Pilot Pen final. “She’s got a great serve so it’s hard to really get on the offensive from the beginning,” the top-seeded Davenport said. “She can run down balls. You think you have her on the defensive and she comes up with a great shot.” They traded breaks to open the match then held serve into the tiebreaker. Williams, seeded third, battled back from 1-3 in the tiebreaker, closing it by hitting back-to-back winners. Davenport had her chances in the second set, leading 4-3 and holding two break points. But Williams won the next four points, including a 164 kph ace, to tie the set 4-4. Williams broke Davenport in the next game, winning it at the net with a backhander off a Davenport drop shot.
