1 dies as scooter hits ex-CM’s escort
Nahan, August 18
One person was killed on the spot and another seriously injured when their scooter reportedly collided with a vehicle of the escort of the Governor of Uttaranchal, Mr Surjeet Singh Barnala, today. According to police sources, Suresh Pal of the Governor’s House, Uttaranchal, Dehra Dun, informed the Paonta police that a scooter had collided with a vehicle of the escort of the Governor near Majra in Paonta tehsil. Scooter rider, Mamchand, of Majra died on the spot and another person received serious injuries. OC

Yasin Malik gets bail
New Delhi, August 18
A city court today granted bail to Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Yasin Malik, who was arrested earlier this week for his failure to appear before a Special Court here and visiting abroad in violation of his earlier bail conditions in a pending TADA case. Granting him bail, Special Judge V.K. Jain ordered the release of Mr Malik from jail after he executed a bail bond of Rs 50,000 and two sureties of the like amount. PTI

Parliament House
New Delhi, August 18
A minor fire broke out in Parliament House today damaging a computer. Fire Brigade officials said the fire, which broke out around 5.00 p.m., was ‘minor’ and was detected in room number 135 on the third floor of the building. However, the fire was immediately brought under control. UNI 

Train mishap toll 15
Colombo, August 18 
Fifteen commuters were killed when a train derailed in the Alawwa area of Sri Lanka, 50 km east of Colombo, the police said today. The accident happened when a Colombo-bound train derailed, they said. At least 55 injured were taken to hospital. DPA
