Workshop on plastic surgery concludes

Ludhiana, August 18
The two-day workshop on reconstructive plastic surgery organised by the plastic surgery unit of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in association with the Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, concluded here today.

According to a pressnote, 23 poor and underprivileged patients were operated upon. A CME programme, ‘Burns Update 2001’, was also organised in the Dumra Auditorium, in which over 200 delegates participated.

Five children required plastic surgery for congenital deformities like cleft palate, cleft lip, mitten hand, contracture formations due to burns and post-traumatic tissue losses.

The morning session included a lecture on ‘Trends in Plastic Surgery — Where India Stands,’ by Dr A.K. Gupta. Dr Majumdar, a pioneer in skin culture, spoke about ‘Skin and Tissue Engineering’, through which skin could be cultured artificially.

The latest developments in the field of plastic surgery were discussed in the CME programme ‘Burns Update 2001’ and the delegates were given training in use of latest instruments and burn dressings.

Inderjit, Kulwinder win TT titles

Ludhiana, August 18
Inderjeet Singh and Kulwinder Singh clinched table tennis titles in the junior and senior categories ,respectively, of the Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle Sports Tournament being held here at the Punjab Agricultural University.

Inderjeet outplayed Prince 11-9, 11-6 while Kulwinder Singh quelled a strong challenge from Gunneet Singh before emerging winner 11-8,13-11 and 11-9.

Earlier, in the semi- finals Inderjeet prevailed over Tejpreet Singh 11-7, 12-10 and Prince scraped past Rideypal Singh 11-8,7-11 and 11-9.

Mandeep Kaur outclassed Chandeep Kaur 11-8, 11-7 to bag the title in the senior women section.In the mixed doubles final Charan Kamal Singh and Amarjeet Kaur overpowered Prabhjot Singh and Chandeep Kaur 11-9,8-11 and 13-11.

In cricket, Dugri Unit defeated Narangwal Unit by 11 runs to lift the trophy. Batting first, Dugri Unit scored 64 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in the stipulated 10 overs. Prashant scored 22 runs while Rideypal and Nitin contributed 8 runs each. In reply, Narangwal Unit made 53 for 9 in the allotted 10 overs. Tejpal and Jatinder scored 9 and 7 runs respectively.

Earlier, Dr K.S Aulakh, Vice- Chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University, inaugurated the tournament. Speaking on this occasion Dr Aulakh appealed to the players to stay away from drug abuse. Mr Ram Singh and Mr Gurmeet Singh,Chief Organiser and Chief Secretary ,respectively of the Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle and Mr J. S Toor, Joint Director , Sports and Cultural Activities, PAU, were also present on this occasion.
