SPORTS ROUND-UP
A shot in the arm for roller skating
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh
Roller skating got a boost when a roller hockey team from the UK came to the city for a series of matches with Indian roller hockey teams. Thanks to the president of the Roller Skating Federation of India, Mr Pradeep Ganeriwal, a tie-up with England, the reigning world roller hockey Group B champions, became possible. The most happy person at this development was Ms Madhu Bahl, Principal of the KB DAV Centenary School, Sector 7. The skating rink of the school was liked by the visiting players. Mr Keith Allen, President of the UK Roller Skating Association, and his wife were impressed by the facilities and encouragement given to skaters and other sportspersons in the school.Mr Allen told this reporter that before coming to India, he never visualised that any institution here would be taking such care of its skaters. He said the lighting, the music system and the surface of the rink were liked by his teams.

The UK team was on its way to Japan to take part in the World Non-Olympic Games. They will return to India on August 21 to play two more matches in Delhi and elsewhere. Mr Ganeriwal, who came all the way from Kolkata, said Chandigarh had indoor as well as outdoor skating rinks of world standards, and apart from roller hockey, other events such as speed and artistic events should also be held here. He said KB DAV rink would be the choice for any kind of skating activity.

Ms Bahl has been made a special invitee at the RSFI, considering her services to the cause of skating. Ms Bahl said, she had always been fascinated by the sport. She said she visited the USA every year to meet her son and the good skating facilities there had inspired her to create similar facilities here.

The second phase of the camp for Indian roller hockey team was in progress in the school. The DPI Schools, Mr D.S. Saroya, promised the other day to hold national schools skating events at the schools rink.

Samuel Banerjee Badminton

The second Samuel Banerjee Memorial Badminton Tournament, hosted by the Chandigarh Badminton Players Welfare Association, began at Panjab University gymnasium on August 16. More than 300 players are taking part in this event. Ms Geeta Goyal, a former national badminton player and now president of the association said it was a herculian task to host this meet as generally the sponsors turned a blind eye to badminton. The meet will end tomorrow, and it has earned praise from players who have come from all over the northern region. Jatinder Singh an 11-year-old boy from Nawanshahr, said in Punjab they rarely came across big tournaments where the players were given free food, stay and shuttle-cocks. Vipul Saini of Jammu was of the view that only players could understand the problems of fellow players, so a tournament hosted by a players’ association would keep the welfare of players in mind.

Another notable feature of the tournament is the distribution of Rs 1 lakh as prize money including Rs 70,000 for the winners and runners- up. At the inaugural ceremony, Mr Parminder S Dhindsa, a young MLA, came to the rescue of the association when he announced a grant of Rs 50,000 for the association.

Table tennis getting popular

Table tennis is now one of the most popular sports in the city. The Sector 23 TT hall, constructed a few years ago at the initiative of the then president of Chandigarh Table Tennis Association, Mr P.K. Verma, has given a new lease of life to the game. But another notable feature is the hosting of a number of tournaments by different schools. Last week Manav Mangal School played host to the Manav Mangal Open TT Tournament in which players from all over the northern region took part. Mr Sanjay Sardana, the principal who had himself been a TT player, said that they always wanted to have an independent tournament in their school. Another event named Bhawan Hawks TT Tournament organised by Bhavan Vidyalya school is on the cards and will start next week.
