PCCTU members to court arrest

Ludhiana, August 17
The Punjab and Chandigarh Teachers’ Union has decided to hold a protest march and to court arrest on August 22 in protest against the non-implementation of the pension gratuity scheme of the Punjab Government.

Giving this information, Professor K.B.S. Sodhi, president of the union, said the teachers of private colleges had been demanding implementation of the scheme since long, but nothing had been done so far. He added that the teachers had been forced to adopt such means to get their demand fulfilled.

Professor Sodhi said in the second phase of the protest, from September 12 to 18, teachers from different colleges of the state would hold relay fast in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana. He said the decisions were taken at a meeting of the executive committee at Guru Teg Bahadur National College, Dakha, yesterday.

Primary teachers to hold rally

Teachers of government primary schools will hold a rally at Phagwara on August 26 in protest against the decision of the Punjab Government to replace the Primary Directorate with the Elementary Directorate.

Stating this in a press note, Mr Piara Singh Dhillon, president, Government Primary Teachers’ Association, said the decision was taken at a meeting of the Joint Action Committee held at Government Senior Secondary School, Jawahar Nagar, yesterday.

He said the committee had submitted a memorandum to Mr Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister, Punjab, and leaders of several political parties, demanding that the decision to dissolve the Primary Directorate be taken back. The members also demanded that the plea of unemployed primary teachers to recruit them with immediate effect be accepted.

Vice-Principal suspended

Prof K.C. Aggarwal, Vice-Principal, L.R. DAV College, has been suspended by the DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi, for his alleged indecent behaviour with a girl student of BA Part II.

Prof K.C. Aggarwal’s entry into the college has been banned. He was earlier removed from the post of Vice-Principal by the local managing committee for his indecent behaviour and asked to proceed on three months’ leave.

Rotaract Club team installed

Ludhiana, August 17
The new team for 2001-2002 of Rotaract Club, Government College for Women, was installed under the leadership of its president Rajatdeep Kaur at a function held at the college auditorium here yesterday.

Past District Governor Suresh Choudhry, the chief guest and the installation officer, installed the new team. He highlighted the role and achievements of Rotary International. He also elaborated the Rotary International New Scheme for education upliftment.

Ms Inderjit Kaur Gill Vashisht, Principal of the college, appealed to the students to join the Rotaract Club to contribute the society and nation. She lauded the students in fund raising of Rs 1lakh for Gujarat victims.
