Marriage palace owner found murdered
Kansal (Kharar), August 17
The owner of Gill Estate, Satwant Singh Gill (52), was found brutally murdered at his estate in the wee hours here today. The victim was stabbed several times on face, chest and lower abdomen with a sharp-edged weapon.

Decision on octroi abolition soon: Tandon
SAS Nagar, August 17
The Labour and Employment Minister, Mr Balramji Dass Tandon, today said that holding of lok adalats to settle the industrial disputes was a big success in Punjab. Of the total 18,000 cases pending with the Labour Department, 11,500 had been solved and a compensation of around Rs 9 crore disbursed.

Petrol costs Rs 29.02 per litre in city
Chandigarh, August 17
The price of petrol in the city will be Rs 29.02 per litre and not Rs 28.92 as was erroneously worked out due to application of general sales tax at the first point instead of applying it at the last point. However, the revised price of diesel remains at Rs 16.69 per liter.

Nirupa Roy’s arrest stayed
Panchkula, August 17
Issuing notice to the state of Haryana on an application seeking anticipatory bail, the Judicial Magistrate (first class), Mr Harvinder Singh, today stayed the arrest of cine-star Nirupa Roy, her husband, Kamal Roy, and son Kiran Roy till August 20 in a dowry case.

Third Shatabdi welcome, but cheaper superfast wanted

The introduction of a third Shatabdi is good but there is a need to have a non-stop superfast train between Chandigarh and Delhi, opined city residents, while welcoming the move to have the third Shatabdi from August 25.

CAG report indicts Army

Headquarters, Western Command, and the recently-established Army Institute of Law (AIL) are in the eye of a storm, objections having been raised at the manner in which public funds amounting to Rs 52 lakh were used by the army authorities to assist the AIL. “Grossly misusing delegated powers, HQ, Western Command, sanctioned repairs and modifications to surplus buildings to be used by a private society,” a report tabled by the Comptroller and Auditor General a few days back states.

Zoo animals, birds found dead

Seven animals, including a black buck, a porcupine, two hares and three Indian pigeons were found dead in their respective enclosures at the Chhat Bir Zoo, here this morning.

Invitation for IAF Presidential review

A large static display of IAF aircraft and equipment, an impressive display of flypast and a ceremonial parade will be the main features of the programme at the Air Force Station in Chandigarh when the President of India reviews the Indian Air Force on October 17. A PCO owner at the local bus station had to face a shocking situation when he was asked to deposit about Rs 10 lakh in the local telephone exchange on account of the bill dated August 5, 2001, for 9,86,175 calls. The last date for the payment was fixed at August 14.

Ms Deepti Nath, elder sister of Ms Tripti Nath, Senior Staff Correspondent, The Tribune, and daughter of Mr Tribhuvan Nath, a veteran journalist, died at the Sector 32 Government Medical College Hospital early this morning. She was 34.

Shift DSP from CID to distant place

Coming down heavily on the Punjab Director-General of Police for not implementing orders directing him to consider the advisability of placing two Deputy Superintendents of Police under suspension while granting them pre-arrest bail in a 1993 abduction case, Mr Justice V.M. Jain of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed him to immediately transfer DSP Jagtar Singh to a far-off place and give him a less important posting.
