Soccer match or battle?
Our Sports Reporter

Chandigarh, August 11
The semi-final soccer match at Football Stadium, Sector 17, as part of the Fanta Fiesta today turned out to be a battle. The match was played between Sanjay Public Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, and SD Public School, Sector 32.

No goal was scored by either team in the first half. The team of Sanjay school scored a goal through Sushil in the second half. The Sanjay school authorities alleged that the moment the goal was scored, rival team members led by physical education teacher Arunesh Chaudhary ran along with some persons and started beating up Ram Bilas, captain of the Sanjay school team, as a result of which he suffered serious injuries. He was taken to General Hospital, Sector 16.

They further alleged that the coach Dinesh Sharma was made in charge of the event, who wanted to favour his son Piyush Sharma, whose team SD Public School was trailing at that time. As per rules, any player or coach who had blood relations could be disqualified, which was ignored by the organisers. The school authorities also alleged that the coach Arunesh Chaudhary also threatened the manager, coach and member of the team.

Additional posts for Admn recommended
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, August 11
The recent meeting of the Commissioner, Mr Maha Singh, with Deputy Commissioners of four district under him on the issue of “rightsizing” the administration augurs victory for Panchkula as far as staff size is concerned.

Going by what transpired at the meeting, instead of a slash in the number of existing posts, the demand of the Deputy Commissioner, Ms Jyoti Arora, for sanctioning additional posts found support of the head. “While the Commissioner agreed against abolition of posts lying vacant for the past five years, additional posts for system analysts and data entry operator have been recommended. If sanctioning of posts is not possible, we have given the option of conversion to these,’’ Ms Jyoti Arora said.

Vacant posts and shortage of staff has been the bane of smooth working in the district which came into being in August, 1995. In comparison to other districts falling in this division, the district got the minimum posts at its inception. Later, the Bansi Lal government banned creation of additional posts and status quo was maintained for the vacant ones.

The Chautala government has further announced streamlining the extravagant expenditures in the government by going in for “rightsizing” of staff in all offices, the beginning being made by abolishing posts lying vacant for the past five years.

However, despite this, Ms Arora managed to explain her viewpoint and, besides keeping these posts intact, recommended additional staff for the district at the meeting.

In the district, as many as 21 posts have been lying vacant for over five years and 12 others have not been filled since the last two years. Among these figure posts of clerks, stenos, drivers and others.

Sources said against a sanctioned clerk strength of 56, only 32 seats were filled while in Ambala there were 68 clerks against 82 seats and 50 against 76 in Kaithal. While demanding the filling of 24 vacant posts, sanctioning of 10 new posts has also been recommended. In case of assistants and peons, the situation is no better though in comparison to other districts, the sanctioned posts, too, fall very short of the required number.
