Blood shortage

Chandigarh, August 9
PGI is facing acute shortage of group B blood and has requested voluntary and religious organisations and individuals to donate blood.

According to the PGI Transfusion Medicine Head, Dr S.K. Agnihotri, the Blood Donor Complex remains functional from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Badminton meet begins today

Chandigarh, August 9
The 3rd Inter-School Badminton Teams Championship for boys and girls studying in primary, middle and secondary schools in Panchkula, Chandigarh and SAS Nagar in the age groups of 10, 14 and 19 will begin tomorrow at community centre, Sector 7, Panchkula.

According to Mr T.R. Tuli secretary of the District Badminton Association, Panchkulas a running trophy will be awarded to the best school on the basis of overall performance in different categories.

Carrom meet

The 4th St Stephen’s Carrom Ranking Tournament will be held at St Stephen’s school Sector 45, from August 18 to 20. The meet will be organised by St Stephens’ School under the aegis of the Chandigarh Carrom Association.

According to Mr Mahesh Sekhri, secretary of the association, the events to be organised included men and women’s singles, junior boys and girls’ singles and sub-junior boys and girls. Entries close on August 13 with Mr Kishan Singh, assistant general secretary, at phone 665949.

St Stephen’s carrom

The St Stephen’s Carrom Ranking Tournament will be held at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, from August 18 to 20. The tournament will be held under the auspices of the Chandigarh Carrom Association.

In the three-day tournament, the following events will be conducted: men’s and women’s singles boys’ and girls’ singles (junior) boys’ and girls’ singles (sub-junior).

The players for the junior and subjunior categories should be under-18 and under-14, respectively, as on December 31, 2001.

Entries close with Mr Kishan Singh, Assistant General Secretary, Chandigarh Carrom Association (593-A, Sector 32-A), on August 13.

Coach should update his knowledge’

Om Parkash Yadav, wrestling coach, Sports Authority of India, National Institute of Sports, Patiala, said a coach should update its knowledge in the sport which could help their trainees to improve their performance. Yadav attended the international coaching course at Semmelweis University, Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, Budapest, Hungary, held in June, said he was among the seven coaches who were selected from India for this course. He was declared as best coach out of 40 coaches drawn from 25 countries in 13 disciplines for this course. He said the course had helped him in various ways. The latest techniques used by wrestlers and sports sciences lectures where the applied methods to observe and evaluate the performance of the sportspersons were demonstrated.

Yadav said he also witnessed the European Wrestling Championship where he studied the techno-tactical behaviour of wrestlers on the mat. He said as a coach he would try to adopt these for the Indian wrestlers to enhance their performance.

He said the one-and-a-half-month course had sports specialisation which included sports physiology, conditioning, sports sociology, sports psychology, coach in action, sports pedagogy and women and Olympic movement.

He said the Wrestling Federation of India’s plan to send grapplers abroad for various tournaments was a praiseworthy step and it would certainly help in improving the Indian wrestling standards.

PUDA official suspended

SAS Nagar, August 9
The Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) today suspended a senior assistant in the local estate office — N.P. Singh, in connection with issuing of a occupation certificate to an “incomplete” one-kanal house in Phase 6 here. The occupation certificate had been issued despite over Rs 2 lakh pending against the plot occupant on account of non-construction fee.

The senior assistant has been suspended on the orders of the Housing and Urban Development Minister, Dr Upinderjit Kaur. Recovery of penalty from SDO Pritam Singh and Junior Engineer, Tara Singh for their alleged involvement in the case had also been ordered.

Spot verification of auto-mechanics

Spot verification of auto-mechanics was today conducted to ensure genuineness of the candidates for rehabilitation under the motor market scheme here.

The verifications was conducted by the Sub-Divisional Magistrates, Central and South.

The list of those who were not found working has been displayed on the notice board of the Estate Office.

Any person having objection may file the same by August 14 by appearing before the Assistant Estate Officer or Screening Committee in the Estate Office along with documentary proofs.
