soon Jammu, August 8 He said in the first phase the service would be provided in rural exchanges of Jammu and Srinagar with provision of 4,000 lines in Kashmir and 3,000 lines in Jammu. Mr Chhabra said in Jammu terminals for the service were being installed at Gandhi Nagar, Bantalab, Akhnoor, R.S. Pora, Kathua, Nagrota and Sanji-Chhat. In the Kashmir valley antennae were being installed at Srinagar, Baramula, Sopore, Anantnag, Pulwama and Kulgam. Each antenna will service a minimum of 5-km radius and 400 lines. Mr Chhabra said all charges for these exchanges would be Rs 1.20 per call. The customer would have to deposit Rs 10,000 for getting the wireless in local loop equipment. However, the customer would also have an option to go for an insurance cover of Rs 10,000 at a monthly charge of Rs 20 for the first year. The insurance companies identified for the purpose include New India Assurance Co; United India Insurance Co; National Insurance Co and Oriental Insurance Co. In response to a question about provision of Internet connectivity to subscribers, the CGMT said 13 Internet/Nodes were being added in total for all revenue districts of Jammu and Kashmir and the equipment in this regard was being commissioned shortly. However, Mr Chhabra added that as a special case the BSNL had decided to provide Internet connections to the press and government departments on demand. He further said the BSNL was going to lay about 2100 km of optical-fibre cable in various SSAs of the Jammu and Kashmir telecom circle. Of this, 487 km optical fibre had been planned for the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh circuit and the work for the same was being entrusted to the Ministry of Defence. The CGMT further said that the BSNL was planning to augment and install Multi channel per carrier (MCPC) terminals at Kishtwar to give necessary relief to the Kishtwar Telephone Exchange. Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) connections were available on demand in Jammu city, according to General Manager Telecom, Jammu and Kathua Revenue District, Mr R.K. Upadhayay. He said the BSNL had slashed down the initial restriction charges for the ISDN from Rs 16,500 to Rs 9,500. New rates had come in effect from June, 2001. Mr Upadhayay informed that Internet connections taken on the ISDN were very fast to access and available on demand. Mr Upadhayay hoped that by the end of this year, the underground cable network would be completed. |
BJP for pro-active policy on J&K New Delhi, August 8 Elaborating on the pro-active approach, BJP spokesman
V.K. Malhotra said, “The security forces should be given more powers so as to enable them to search out and eliminate the terrorists”. There was a need to adopt a pro-active policy instead of a defensive policy to root out terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, Professor Malhotra said, adding that time had come for strong action. Briefing newspersons, he said Union Home Minister
L.K. Advani had convened a meeting on Jammu and Kashmir situation today and hoped that the party’s suggestions were also kept in mind while evolving an action plan to deal with the situation. While the peace process with Pakistan should continue, harsh action against terrorists was necessary for restoring confidence and sense of security among the people, he said. Professor Malhotra expressed a hope that all political parties would extend full support to the government for evolving a suitable action plan. In a separate statement, BJP General Secretary Narendra Modi said a message must go to Pakistan that India would not tolerate any further bloodshed by
terrorists. |

Smash terrorist camps across LoC:
Morcha Jammu, August 8 The Mukti Morcha chief, Prof Virender Gupta, who seemed to be highly worked up over continued massacres of innocent people said that the Centre should implement the resolution adopted by Parliament and “liberate” Pakistan occupied Kashmir. Professor Gupta told newsmen here yesterday that the “weak” policy adopted by the Government of India had resulted in the Kargil conflict and had encouraged Pakistan President, Gen Pervez Musharraf, to treat terrorism as “freedom struggle”. He said it was time for the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir state, statehood to the Jammu region and the union territory status to Ladakh. He said the Kashmir issue could be resolved if the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Ladakh regions were fulfilled. Professor Gupta said that once the Jammu region was given the statehood status it would break the backbone of militancy in the region. He suggested to the Centre not to ignore the aspirations of people of Jammu. |
J&K slashes prices of PDS
commodities Srinagar, August 8 According to a notification issued to the Food and Supplies Department yesterday, the sale price of rice grade A has been reduced from Rs 12 to Rs 9 per kg, while the price of IR-8 rice (common variety) has been brought down from Rs 11.50 to Rs 8.60 per kg. In case of wheat, the revised rate has been fixed at Rs 6.60 per kg instead of Rs 8.80 per kg and that of flour at Rs 6.80 per kg instead of Rs 9 per kg. These revised rates came into force from yesterday. The notification said the existing concessional rates available to rationees below poverty line and beneficiaries of the Antodaya Anna Yojana scheme would remain unchanged. An official spokesman said the reduction in the prices of these commodities had been ordered as a consequence of the recent reduction in the central issue prices of foodgrains by the Central Government. On the request of the state government, the Central Government had agreed to reduce the price of IR-8 rice (common variety) also as it is very popular in Kashmir. |
