1,000 live bombs recovered from steel scrap
Ludhiana, July 27
Dhandhari Kalan, the dry port situation about 10 km from here, has literally been sitting over a powder keg so far. About 1000 live bombs were recovered today from the steel scrap lying in the Container Freight Station there, in a massive combing operation launched jointly by the district administration, Army and the police. 

Cong leader’s body found
Ludhiana, July 27
Sukhdev Singh Manewal (52), member of the Ludhiana Zila Parishad, vice-president of the District Congress Committee and a close aide of Mr Ishar Singh Meharban, former Congress minister, was found dead under mysterious circumstances on the banks of a canal at Garhi Tarkhana, village near Machiwara, late in the evening, today.

Marriages of convenience?

The Punjab Lok Morcha organised a political convention here to moblise support for the state-level rally being organised in the first week of September. The rally will either be organised in Ludhiana or Jalandhar.

Teej and saawan celebrations by ladies’ clubs
Ludhiana, July 27
Though the events associated with the celebration of teej may have changed over the years, the essence continues to remain the same. This was evident from the manner in which members and dependents of the Niharika Ladies Club celebrated the festival of teej — a traditional Punjabi festival today. The celebrations began with the traditional jaago with ladies dressed in their brightest best. Jaago was tastefully decorated with flowers and small diyas. A swing was also made for the members.

Sikh morcha against misguiding community
Ludhiana, July 27
A new Sikh body, Shri Hemkunt Sikh Morcha, has given a call against misguiding the Sikh community as far as the creation of Khalistan is concerned. In a press release here today, Mr G.S.Middha, the working general secretary of the morcha, said that the so-called panthic leaders had always betrayed the community.

The Sarabha Ladies Club organised a summer queen contest at Hotel Le Baron yesterday. The participants were dressed in chiffon in summery colours with appropriate accessories.

Pest attack affects cotton crop
Ludhiana, July 27
Cotton growers in the state are facing problem of pest attack on their crop due to the prevailing weather conditions. The population of American Bollworm or American Sundi has appeared 30 days earlier in the cotton crop and is causing damage to it.

PAU to introduce new course
Ludhiana, July 27
Punjab Agricultural University will introduce the rural agriculture work experience in its BSc (agriculture) course from this session. According to Dr M.S. Tiwana, Dean, College of Agriculture, PAU, RAWE is being introduced to make students familiar with the socio-economic situations prevailing in villages and to inculcate confidence and competence for solving problems related to agriculture .

Bail plea of ASI rejected

The Special Judge, Mr G.R. Banyal, has rejected the anticipatory bail application moved by ASI, Ajmer Singh, posted at Samrala police station, in a corruption case registered against him on a complaint by Narinder Kumar.

Trials for PCA tourney today

The Ludhiana District Cricket Association will conduct trials on the grounds of the Arya College for Boys on July 28 at 2.30 pm to select the team for the inter-district tournament of the Punjab Cricket Association. Players born on or after September 1, 1987, are eligible for the trials.
