National Games preparations reviewed

Chandigarh, July 27
A meeting for the smooth conduct of the three sports disciplines of golf, tennis and rowing, allotted to the city for the forthcoming National Games, was held here today. The committee reviewed the progress of the National Games in respect of its coaching camps and the arrangements to be made.

It was decided to form an organising committee, to be headed by the Adviser, Ms Neeru Nanda, and other committees, such as boarding, lodging, hospitality, protocol and transport, for the smooth conduct of the event. It was also decided to nominate president and secretary of the three disciplines to the organising committee. The venue for rowing is the Sukhna Lake, while golf events will be held at the Chandigarh Golf Club and tennis events at the Tennis Stadium, Sector 10. It was also agreed to have media centre at each of the above venues for better coordination. Mr Vivek Attray, Director, Public Relations, UT, will be in charge of the media committee.

Mr Rajan Kashyap, president of COA, said regarding the participation of Chandigarh in the National Games, the organising committee had approved 13 disciplines in which Chandigarh would participate and the COA had asked all the respective federations to hold coaching camps in this direction. He said the Tennis Stadium, Sector 10, was geared up for the tennis event and had the requisite infrastructure. Regarding the flood lighting at courts, he said whenever the organising committee of National Games released the funds, the lighting could be installed.

Mr D.P. Azad said the first coaching camp for the Chandigarh team ended yesterday at CGA range, Kishangarh, and the next camp would begin in the first week of August. Regarding the issue of providing sailing boats for rowing, SAI officials had promised to make these available.

Football tourney

On the second day of the pre-Subroto Mukherjee cup football tournament played here today, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, outplayed Government Model Senior Secondary school, Sector 19, 4-0, with main scorers being Sandeep, who scored two goals, followed by Shabal and Rajnish, scoring one goal each.

In the second match of the day, Shishu Niketan Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, defeated St Soldier’s International School, Sector 28, 4-3 in tie-breaker At normal time the scores read 1-1. The scorers in the tie-breaker were Anoop, Sumit and Atul for the winners while Mohinder and Rakesh Vohra scored for the losers.

Calender finalised

The newly-formed Chandigarh Table Tennis Association has finalised its calendar for the session 2001-2002, with the first tournament being Manav Mangal open tournament from August 12 to 14. The next tournament will be Bhavan Vidyalya first Chandigarh ranking TT tournament from August 23 to 25, followed by New Public School second Chandigarh ranking TT tournament from September 21 to 23, RS Mehta memorial open table tennis from October 11 to 13 and Chandigarh Table Tennis championships from November 6 to 10.

Kabaddi meet

A 14-day kabaddi tournament organised by the Sports Club, Sakrulapur and Gram Panchayat, Sakrulapur ended at Sakrulapur, near here today. Mrs Lakhwinder Kaur Garcha, General Secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, gave away prizes to the winners.

IT Dept working hours extended

The Income Tax Department has decided to work till 6 p.m. on July 30 and till 7 p.m. on July 31, the last date of filing the returns, to complete over an estimated 1,70,000 returns with over 40,000 more to be filed in the coming days.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner Income Tax, Mr Ashwini Luthra, here today adding that if needed the department will double the staff for these days. Mr Luthra said the department had not got any information regarding the extension of the last date of filing the returns.

He said the department would not be able to accept the returns on Saturday and Sunday considering fatigue of the staff, who have been receiving 5,000 to 6,000 returns every day for the past many days. He said the department had received over 1,25,000 returns till yesterday in Chandigarh, Nangal and Ropar and these do not include those who do not file return in time because they neither claim refund nor interest is charged on them due to they being in the non-tax paying category but are obliged to file returns.

Allotment to auto-mechanics begins

The Chandigarh Administration today started the process of alloting built-up sites to rehabilitate auto-mechanics. The Assistant Estate Officer today issued letters to about 300 mechanics, who were successful in the draw of lots, asking them to deposit 15 per cent of the price of the site within 30 days.

The letters were issued to those mechanics whose cases had been cleared after scrutiny. The remaining 70 mechanics who were successful in the draw have been issued notices that a committee will make an on the spot assessment.

Meanwhile, the Auto-mechanics Federation today continued their indefinite fast. The federation has been demanding the rehabilitation for all mechanics.

Criminal Justice Coordination Conference today

The judiciary, administration, police and the jail authorities will jointly organise ‘Criminal Justice Coordination Conference’ at the CII complex tomorrow. The Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr Parag Jain, said the above mentioned wings of the criminal justice system would discuss the issues concerning criminal justice at the meeting.

A meeting of the Superintendents of Police, Deputy Superintendents of Police and the Station House Officers of various police stations was held at the Police Headquarters late this evening to discuss the agenda for tomorrow’s conference.

Land handed over to IOC

The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) was today handed over the possession of land in Sector 25 where a depot of the IOC has come up. This will enable the IOC to make its depot functional within 20 days, company officials assured senior Chandigarh Administration officials today.

Meanwhile, a case of the IOC requiring a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Deputy Commissioner’s office to apply for clearance from the Chief Controller of Explosives, has been moved. The IOC has also applied for clearance from the Fire Department and the police.

Once the depot comes up the rate of petrol in Chandigarh will be at par with rates in Panchkula and S.A.S. Nagar.

Meanwhile, the Union Petroleum Ministry has agreed to reduce the rate of petrol in Chandigarh and the ministry is expected to send an order to this effect any day.

Special police drive today

The police will organise a special drive in the city tomorrow to educate people about the road safety norms and challan the violators.

According to information available, cops will be deployed atleast at 29 points in various parts of the city for a special checking of vehicles.

It is learnt that the drive will continue from 8 am to 1:30 pm.
