Show-cause notices to 15 city chemists
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 8
Following raids, the UT Health Department has issued show-cause notices to 15 city chemists who had been running their shops without valid licences. These chemists have been asked to explain why they have been running their shops without ensuring the presence of a qualified pharmacist at the counter.

Earlier, the UT Health Department had identified 20 chemists who had been running their shops without valid licences. Most of these chemists were reported to be operating in the periphery of the city and had got their shops registered in the names of pharmacists who did not man the counters.

Surprise checks were conducted on the shops under scrutiny and the owners of those not being manned by qualified pharmacists were issued notices. Sources add that failure by the owners to explain why these shops were not manned by qualified pharmacist would lead to suspension and even cancellation of their licences.

A qualified pharmacist should be present at the counter to give medicines and write bills. Chemist shops have to be run by persons holding technical degrees and licences and their physical presence at the shop is a must. But many of these chemists have “hired” licences from licence-holder pharmacist for about Rs 1,000 per month and were giving medicines without a proper prescription from a qualified doctor.
