Workshops on potential of PU’s supercomputer
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 8
Panjab University is deliberating upon programmes to interact directly with the potential users of its supercomputer in the industry and the teaching faculties.

The department will organise workshops where the exact use of the machine, its range of activities and the possibility of help from the PU faculty will be discussed. One of the main highlights of the computer facility is its use for high-quality research work at throwaway prices.

Also under serious consideration is a computer plant at Ludhiana, keeping in mind the concentration of industry, there. The main areas of work have been identified as design and computing power. One possible site is the extension library of the university.

“One of the areas where the computer facility can be explored is the field of societal needs. Take for example the cycle industry in Ludhiana. The machine can be used to work out possible variations in the existing design of the machines”, says Prof C.M. Behl of the Department of Computer Science.

It is also felt that there is little awareness about the potential of the machine. A student says an industrialist who can be a possible user needs to understand the capability of the machine and the possible areas where it can be utilised.

There exists a big missing link between the industry and the teaching faculty. None wants to exchange its secret with the other. The use of the machine is not mere clerical work, adds Professor Behl.

An evening of nostalgia, fun
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, July 8
It was an evening of nostalgia for the girls and boys of St Anne’s who had passed out of the school in 1989. The former students shared their experiences and their dreams at the reunion held at a local club by the St Anne’s Old Students Association here today.

The girls and boys together added a lot of fun to the ambience. The evening was dotted with jokes, anecdotes and other light talks, which encompassed the long journey these students had undertaken between 1989 and 2001.

Around 100 former students participated in the reunion. There had been small get-togethers in the past. The former students planned to make the reunion an annual feature.

The vice-president of the association said, “It is great to meet old friends and travel down memory lane. We are glad to see how our school has developed and progressed over the years. It has great staff and infrastructure. We are proud to be associated with St Anne’s.”

The secretary of the association, said, “The purpose of this reunion is to revive lost memories and forgotten contacts. It is a wonderful occasion to live the childhood days again.”
