SPORTS ROUND-UP
Tennis prodigy does city proud
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh
It was a good week for tennis when Sunil Kumar Sipeya, reached the third round of Junior Wimbledon. It was Sunil’s first entry to Junior Wimbledon and he did the city proud with his valiant game. In the doubles, he paired well with Clinton Letcher of Australia and lost after a tough fight in the quarter-finals. In the singles he disposed of world number eight Florian Mayer of Germany. In the pre-quarterfinals, he went down fighting in three sets to a British player and his performance was praised by Ramesh Krishnan in his column.

Mr Rajan Kashyap, Chairman of the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association, says: “This achievement has once again authenticated the success of our Rural Boys Scheme. It may be recalled that 18-year-old Sunil who belongs to Kapurthala was born in a lower middle class family. His father is an employee at the Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala. The CLTA, under its scheme to encourage rural boys, picked up this boy on the basis of talent search trials when he was nine years old. Years of hard work kept Sunil’s graph moving upwards, said Mr Kashyap.”

Shooting girls:
Local girl shooters, Sabeeha Dhillon and Chetan Preet, are back in the city after taking part in the 10th meeting of the Olympic Hopes Shooting Championship, Plzen (Czech republic). They took part in the 10 metres air rifle event and were placed 13th and 21st respectively. Sabeeha said though she was placed 13th, yet she scored 390 points out of 400 which was a good score at the international level. Sabeeha said she was struck by the perfection shown by a Czech girl, Ketrina, who shot 400 out of 400. She, however, was pained when some of her foreign friends asked her about the ranges here, and she had to tell a lie that they practised in air-conditioned ranges in India. It is an irony that the Sector 25 shooting range which has been there for many years, is without an indoor range and despite that shooters have shown good results.

Badminton camp ends:
The controversial national schools badminton camp ended on Saturday with 12 players and two coaches now ready to take off for the 3rd Asian Schools Badminton Championships in Malaysia. The players played on a wooden surface here, but in Malaysia they will have to play on synthetic surface. The organisers — the Schools Games Federation of India — seemed little perturbed over the situation and the head of the camp, TR Chauhan, was rarely seen there. There also were complaints of players being given sub-standard food though the daily allowance was fixed at Rs 150 per player. The Sports Authority of India’s regional office which sanctioned the camp, also did not seem serious about it, though the players stayed just 100 metres away from the SAI office.Back
