Know thy politicians

THIS refers to Akshay Sood’s write-up "Know thy politicians" (June 17). The author says "Why not start understanding the politicians? And may be start giving the credit due to them". Having seen through our present-day politicians, one finds it hard to accept this appeal. Politicians’ sole aim is to capture power by hook or crook and cling to it forever. How can we have sympathy or regard for them?

Being an examiner

"Thrill of being an examiner" (June 10) by D.C. Sharma was a diverting piece of writing. The funny and erroneous answers given by the students revealed their inability to write simple and grammatically correct English.

Only those examiners, who thoroughly evaluate answer scripts come across such amusing howlers. Others simply go through the motions of evaluation and award marks according to their whims making or marring the careers of many students.

Wiping out intolerance

This refers to "Wiping out intolerance" by C.L. Gulati (May 20). According to Sikh Gurus, there is one Father. Christians and Muslims believe that there is one God and one Allah.

Mutual love, social equality, religious tolerance, as advocated by the writer is the need of the day.

India, being the country of rishis, munis and seers, can lead the universe towards this goal and help bring about universal brotherhood.

Meddling with history

This refers to "Why meddle around with history so ham-handedly" by Chanchal Sarkar (June 17). Renaming of buildings, roads etc. must be banned by legislation. What’s wrong with old names? Let’s not tinker with history.

There is a trend these days to change the names of roads, institutions, houses and places bearing English or European names. These are products of the Imperial Raj. Renaming them after Indian leaders who made absolutely no contribution towards their inception amounts to immortalising them for no reason. It belies historical facts, causes confusion and is fraught with the danger of arousing caste and religious passions.

Shimla’s Mall was renamed Lala Lajpat Rai Marg decades ago. Few Shimlaites are aware of it. For them The Mall will always remain The Mall.

Snowdon and Ripon hospitals have been renamed Indira Gandhi and Deen Dayal Upadhaya Hospitals, respectively. The reputation of all these stalwarts will not be enhanced by naming these after them. Not to be outdone, Lady Reading is now Kamla Nehru Hospital.

ROSHNI JOHAR, Shimla
