Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 17
Spurred by a flamboyant knock of 94 runs by Jagjit Saini, the Industrial Cricket Club defeated Chetna XI by 49 runs and won the final of the ‘A’ Division of the V UT Summer League Cricket tournament at the Sector 16 Cricket stadium here today.

Due to overnight rain, the 50-over final was truncated to 30 overs each innings.

The I.C.C. XI opened with Jagjit Saini and Aman Kumar with just 23 runs on the board. The team lost its skipper Aman as he was involved in a mix-up with Saini before running himself out. On the very next ball, Dharamvir was caught by Dinesh Mongia off his own bowling.

It was Jagjit Saini who continued merrily at the other end. After getting himself set with singles and twos, he struck 20 runs in one over off Dinesh Mongia, which included two sixes. He completed his 50 off 42 balls. In the 100 of the innings, posted in 14.3 overs, Saini’s contribution was 77.

Useful contributions also came from Gautam Sharma (35 off 30 balls) and Amandeep (26 off 17 balls). It was, however, Jagjit Saini who stole the limelight with a hurricane knock of 94, which came off just 64 balls. The knock included 6 sixes and 9 boundaries. The ICC XI scored a healthy total of 205 runs in the allotted 30 overs.

The Chetna team was banking heavily on Dinesh Mongia. He opened with A.P. Singh but was unfortunate as he was caught brilliantly at mid-on by Vikram Khajuria of Amandeep for just three runs. Vikramjit Sodhi (32) and Satnam Singh resurrected the innings with a partnership of 55 runs. However, off spinner Vikram Khajuria removed both batsmen in 7 balls.

With 5 wickets down for 70 runs, Jagmohan of Chetna XI with 33 runs of 28 balls waged a lone battle but it was too little and too late. The Chetna XI innings folded for 156 runs.

In the final of the ‘B’ division held earlier, Pace XI defeated the Food Corporation of India while the Chandigarh Sports Club outclassed Satluj Coaching Centre in the ‘C’ division.
