Inclusion of new sectors in municipal limits opposed
SAS Nagar, June 11
The Punjab Town and Country Planning Department has objected to a move to include the area in five new sectors (76 to 80) within the limits of the local civic body. The area forms part of about 2,000 acres which the civic body proposes to bring within its limits to push up its revenue from octroi collection.

The University Grants Commission UGC has granted permission to the GGDSD College, Sector 32, to start a three years vocational course in industrial chemistry. At a meeting called by the UGC in New Delhi today, cases of granting permission to start vocational courses in 12 colleges affiliated to Panjab University were discussed. The Punjab and Haryana High Court is reported to have the second highest number of pending dowry death cases in the country. According to figures released by the Press Information Bureau, as many as 842 such cases are awaiting disposal.

The UT Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr Sant Parkash, today granted bail to the Managing Director of Nova Industry, D.V Khanna, on furnishing a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh. The accused was sentenced to one-day police remand on June 8 after being arrested by the Central Excise Department on charges of evasion of excise duty.

30 jhuggis removed

In another major encroachment drive, the enforcement staff of the UT Estate Office and the Municipal Corporation, today demolished nearly 30 jhuggis of rag pickers on the vacant land near the Sector 34 gurdwara. The possession of the same was handed over to the Chandigarh Housing Board, who had started the process of levelling the uneven surface by the evening for developing a park.
