Police rescues teenager from confinement
Chandigarh, June 7
A 16-year-old boy was rescued by the police after being illegally confined by the owner of a guest house for nine days. He was thus ‘punished’ because his cousin, an employee in the guest house, had allegedly duped the owner of Rs 4000.

PGI fails to place order for spiral CT scan
Chandigarh, June 7
Even after months of discussions and scores of meetings later, the PGI administration has failed to place an order for the much-needed Rs 3 crore spiral CT scan machine. Some faculty members have alleged that the purchase was being delayed as those involved in the procedure could be having "conflicting interest".

PGI rectifying salary ‘slip’

The PGI administration is recording the statements of 12 officials who are allegedly responsible for making an extra payment of about Rs 5.5 lakh to a nurse who had resigned five years ago. The PGI Accounts Department had been depositing the salary of Ms Anniema Kurien, Sister, Grade II, into her account, though she was not even on the rolls of the institute.

PM may intervene in Punjab-Haryana disputes
Chandigarh, June 7
Given the equation among the Chief Ministers of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, there seemingly is a possibility of some of the outstanding inter-state disputes getting sorted out sooner than later. 

Traffic police drives spin out of control

An ‘overdose’ of special drives launched by the city traffic police recently have come a cropper because of a shortage of the traffic staff.

Drive to check drunken driving

The traffic police will launch a special drive to check drunken driving. Traffic cops will be deployed outside various pubs, hotels and night clubs in the city to keep a check on drunken driving.

Deploy excess press staff elsewhere, says Jacob
Chandigarh, June 7
The UT Administrator, Lieut-Gen (retd) J.F.R. Jacob, has directed officials to redeploy the surplus staff of the local government press in the other departments here. He was on a surprise visit to the press here today.The UT Secretary for Printing and Stationery, Mr G.K. Marwah, told the Administrator that a proposal for the rationalisation of the staff in various sections had been prepared.

A seven-day Bhagvadgita course organised by the local unit of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON ) at Hare Krishna Dham, Sector 36, concluded here today. As many as 50 students from different institutions participated in the course, according to Akinchan Priya Dasa Prabhu, a spokesman of ISKCON.

The police has registered a case of cheating against Amrinder Singh, a member of the SGPC, on the complaint of a Chandigarh-based insurance company.

Nehi Chaudhry to perform on June 11

Under-15 badminton squad

Five boys and two girls below 15 years have been invited to play in the International Youth Badminton Tournament to be held in the Czech Republic from June 8 to 10. According to Mr Surinder Mahajan who is also accompanying the team as coach, the players will play with top-level players of Europe.

The second semifinal of the fifth UT Summer League Cricket Tournament between Godrej Cricket Club and Chetna Cricket Club in ‘A’ division which was scheduled to be played at the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, here today was washed out due to heavy rain.
