‘Awareness can improve public health’

The 24th public health lecture was organised by the Health Education Cell of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital on “Your health in your hands” here on Thursday evening. The lecture was delivered by Dr Harcharan Singh, winner of B.C. Roy Award and former WHO consultant and Advisor Health, Planning Commission of India.

In his lecture, Dr Harcharan emphasised that health awareness alone can bring positive changes in public health scenario in the country. He said, “It is sad that even after 50 years of Independence 50 per cent of Indian population is suffering from one illness or another which depicts the poor state of affairs. In our country 5 to 6 per cent of national budget is required for health but only 1.5 to 2 per cent is spent on it.”

Medical conference on obesity

A medical conference on obesity and its management was held at the VLCC here today. Several doctors of the city took part in the conference.

According to a press statement, Dr Harish, a visiting doctor from Delhi, said an excess of calorie intake was generally responsible for the ever-increasing rate of recorded obesity, though there were other causes for the disease. He said obesity had to be treated like any other disease as it was the root cause of other diseases like diabetes, hypertension, heart diseases and joint disorders.

Sub-jr basketball nationals from June 2

Ludhiana, May 26
The 28th sub-junior national basketball championship will be held from June 2 to 7 at Kapurthala. As many as 22 teams have already confirmed their participation in the tournament.

These include Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Pondicherry, Nagaland, Manipur, Orissa, Bihar, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Uttaranchal and Punjab.

The general secretary of the Punjab Basketball Association disclosed here today that the four courts for holding the championship, including two flood-lit courts, had been readied to conduct the matches and more than 60 officials of the Basketball Federation of India would be deputed for conducting the championship.
