‘‘Five crore assessees will be brought in the income tax bracket in the next three years,” said Mr J.S. Ahluwalia, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax for North-West, at a seminar on Finance Act, 2001, here today.

The seminar was organised by the Chandigarh branch (NIRC) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Mr Ahluwalia said the Income Tax Department would be reconstructed and the process of tax collection would be computerised. He said the junior staff of the department would be removed and the lowest ranking official would be the Tax Assistant.

Mr Ahluwalia said, “We will not call assessees to our offices for verification of returns. This will be possible once the department is fully computerised.”

Mr S.K. Sampath, a senior chartered accountant of New Delhi, talked about amendments in the Finance Act, 2001, and penalties for non-compliance. Mr Baldev Garg, Chairman of the Chandigarh branch (NIRC), the seminar had been conducted to understand the amendments in the right perspective. It was decided to educate public to maintain regular account books and file tax returns in time.

The others who spoke on the occasion were the UT Commissioner of Income Tax, the UT Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, and income tax officials of Chandigarh and Panckula.
